Thank you for explaining this, so I was not wrong to invest in good old HDD drives :hifive: it doesn't matter whether I read or copy data, I always have min. 100 MB\s data transfer rate :beg:

I use an external 2TB SSD for Kontakt libraries. It's connected via Thunderbolt. USB or SATA connections doesn't make any sense.

@twoheart I'm considering NAS, but I've already invested in 24 HDD's of 2 TB capacity, 12 for data and 12 for backup, NAS in my country is too expensive. I don't care about high data transfer rate, what matters to me is this system exists at all, and I can rely on him

I've been using Xigmanas (used to be NAS4FREE) for years now in an old pc case. I currently have 8 x 4TB drives striped.

hahahaha WTF ??? When i read use RAID better i said to myself wtf ? They still use RAID and faster than SSD ?? I changed from 4 western digital 10.000 rpm on RAID 0 to SSD and it was like night and day !! hahahaha

I didn't see it at first either, but when they recommended 128 GB SSDs, I thought something was up

@twoheart a land in Middle-Earth, home of the evil Sauron :mates:

@northwinds this is very interesting, but it involves additional costs, I would have to buy an additional UPS because there are frequent power outages in my region.

@Putinaros22 If I had an infinite budget, I wouldn't ask questions here :bleh:

Have you considered using an old computer with many (mbs can have up to 8, usually 4-6) SATA connectors and NAS software like OpenMediaVault ? I've been using an old Intel coreduo 8400 with 4GB of RAM for years as a backup storage. I turn it on probably once or twice a week...

@SineWave This topic is becoming more and more interesting

I have an old HP Pro 6300 SFF at home with 16 GB of Ram and i7 3770 onboard, it can contains 2x 3.5" HDD's and 3x 2.5" SSD's.

I like the Linux NAS idea, that would be more economical and profitable for me, but there is one problem - the price of a 1x 14 GB HDD
Toshiba X300 Performance 14TB 3.5" SATA III - in my country it costs 412 EU, and the average earnings here are 700 EU\month :deep_facepalm:
SSD Samsung 870 QVO 8TB 2.5" SATA III - costs 563 EU, it's way too much for me, but I will try to solve this problem somehow.

Thank you for your constructive answer

I've thought about everything and I'd like to thank you @twoheart and @SineWave for opening my mind to something more than just a regular PC.
Fortunately, there is a Raspberry Pi and this gives me even more opportunities. Linux is the future I think, but people don't understand it yet, right now in this moment, the time will come for that. Thank you all and I won't ask stupid questions anymore :mates:

The Gigabyte motherboard in my NAS supports 6 SATA drives, so recently I stuffed it with 6x2TB drives, ~50E each. I find 12TB quite enough for samples, plugins, utilities, editors, even OS images. 6TB is for my film and documentary collection... Yeah, I don't use any of them for parity/safety backup, which is kinda stupid... but most of this data can be acquired somehow again. Especially the "docos". :)

There are cheap PCIe and PCI cards with additional SATA ports that one can use if more SATA ports is needed. Since you invested in a lot of HDDs, like me, these can be useful if more space is needed, but so far I've been just swapping HDDs with bigger ones to get more space. I started with 6 500MB HDDs about 6 or 7 years ago, then slowly swapped for 1TB drives, and then swapped those for 2TB drives. I use the old drives for archival of data I really won't be sorry if I lose it.

The thing with OpenMediaVault is that it's so light and fast you can load it from a USB stick. Love OMV. So easy to setup, too and control it through any browser.

    Cheers!

Speed-wise RAID xx with SSD's doesn't give you much of an edge - what it does give is redundancy for critical data integrity applications.
With HDD technology RAID does give a slight speed advantage when used in 10 or 5 configurations. HDD RAID 1 - straight mirroring there is really no speed advantage but there is max redundancy. HDD RAID 0 will provide a speed boost and allow for multiple drives to be chained together to make larger volumes but there is ZERO data redundancy. There is very little reason to run SSD's in a RAID config unless you're looking to protect data of really large volumes...

This is correct. For the most part RAID is for Redundancy, as the acronym implies. The speed boosts only make sense in big HDD storage arrays for SAN or NAS purposes.

If you're recording something critical, like a big live thing, you'll want redundancy just in case. RAID is not backup, though for it's often used in addition for that.

I also think Linux is the future. I've always thought so and I gave these reasons for that: it's free/open source, it's so flexible you can have 3 distros installed - each for different purpose, each completely differently customised, taking just a few GB on the disk, you have everything completely under control. Linux is freedom. Freedom of choice. You can't say the same for Win and Mac. These just got worse with time and more annoying. (I'm using Win and Mac a little too). People will eventually get tired of these corporations having anal sex with them.

I actually wanted to post this link to a OMV 6 Raspberry Pi 4 setup. Really, really interesting.

I have always considered the X systems (Unix, Xenix, Linux, MacOS X ...) to be the future.
They have not been stitched & patched together over time like other OSs (Windows, Mac OS, OS/2 ...) but have been developed in a university environment through analysis and cosequent implementation.

In my company I had a Unix system as a client server platform for ~7 years. The server has not crashed once in the whole 7 years (once I had to replace an HDD, but the OS had nothing to do with that).
OK, back then it was a bit more complex to get it running or to implement hardware (linking the kernel), but ...

... after that, our parent company switched to Windows Server. From then on, I needed a full-time sys admin.
After I became independent, I switched part of it back to Linux and everything runs smooth as silk.

With Windows systems, on the other hand, you never get bored. :suicide:

p.s.: I would be happy if the developers of music software would invest in Linux software the same way they invest in Windows software. That would be a golden age

    Hello, man
I am actually using 2 ssd Lexar NS100 2tb, one for daw, other for samples
It changes a lot the load speeds of everything.

I have a huge sample library, since 2007, the load times to seek samples gets faster

Worth a lot, in my opinion

PS.: sorry about my english, not my main language
