Monitor and interface levels

  1. Hello

Quick question, I know this is down to personal preference and room size but, how do you have your monitors. Do you have your settings on your monitors at 0db and interface output lower or do you reduce the volume on your monitors and raise the interface volume

I have no choice but to have it the former way with Dynaudio BM-12As (there are 3 choices of input: -10, 0, +4 so I have them at -10 it's the most quiet setting). Otherwise, I would turn them down a little and turn up on the audio interface to avoid hearing any noise.

My Neumann KH120 II's are at 0 db and the Volt 2 interface monitor knob handles volume levels.

I have my amp set at 75% and then I adjust to a comfortable (conversational) dBSPL loudness with my monitor controller. Same goes for when working on active monitors with the input gain on the back.

Monitors down, ofc. The interface's fader resolution decreases at lower levels -> less precise. I adjusted my monitors so that a song with ~ 14LUFSi produces 85dB SPL when my interface is at 0 (if you're mixing/mastering louder you need to adjust this, ofc).
Also, when your monitors are fully up and a signal runs accidentally with full power through your interface, you'd probably need either new ears or a new heart. :winker:
