I feel that pop song structure is dogma. Or any song structure that is held up as 'standard' is dogma.

Honestly, f*ck all that. Make art that dictates where it needs to flow and breathe.

I like to listen to good songs that tell their story in several verses.
On the other hand, a song that is condensed to one verse and gets to the point is better than a song with 3 verses that has nothing to tell.

 

A complete verse??? Sounds exhausting.

 

I agree with a lot of what you say, and if that's not what art should be in the future, that's perfectly OK.
It's a nice "leisure activity" that's fun for everyone involved. And that's just as important as high art.

But we will still need real art in the future. It is defined more by the fact that it is difficult to achieve and requires a lot of knowledge and/or skills, hard work and that the artist is at or near the top of a pyramid of these requirements.

In essence the difference can be reduced to: leisure activities make me happy, art moves me.
So, its good to have both imho.

 

A great song can have 3 words or less.

 

But actually, 144 times on the album version and 80 on the radio edit.

 

Or this one. A #1 hit in Germany over several weeks. With which we could upset our parents so nicely and that's why we all sang along ...

It is possible to convey quite a lot with minimal lyrics, chords and duration. Just a shame these kids see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing.

Thanks for the Discharge to almost even me out after the Pinkpantheress. I think I'm back to center now. That was scary for a second there.

 

The original US National Anthem , The Star Spangled Banner, only had one verse.
it was "Jose can you, si?"

of course over years with the popularity of baseball it was lenghthened to give the ball players time to adjust their nuts while getting ready to play, and everybody time to get a 2nd beer before the game started.

but now its gotten ridicoulous, with over 73 verses and the over the top drum solo.

Some of the songs I've written are almost like snippets, simple and barely have a verse, more like...hey, this is the lowdown on this tune, while others can go on for a while or have different parts with just verses and no chorus. One I'm working on now called Triggerfinger (if I ever get it finished) is more kinda like an ode which tells the story of two men, Triggerfinger and Bill, who fall in love with a conniving, witchy woman named Juana, and all this drama takes place back in the 1870's in a rough northern California gold mining spot called Fiddletown. Beautiful Juana pits the two against each other hoping that Triggerfinger kills Bill her husband and so then Triggerfinger gets hung for murder so she can have all Bill's money after striking a very huge vein of gold as a miner (...as wide as Bill is tall...). Each character has it's own part with different melodies and chord structures and my exercise is to write them all so there's a glue and a seamless continuity. It's a guitar driven song. So far the first two parts, Bill and Triggerfinger's are in 3/4 but I think Juana's is going to have more a Mexican flavor in mostly 4/4. I keep getting bogged down by other stuff but I'm sure will triumph in the end.
