What do you think of modern songs with only one verse?
20 million monthly Spotify listeners can't be wrong, can they?

If you didn't know, you might think this was an SNL skit:

(Won't let me embed. Can TikTok be added as an option to the Media button/embeddable videos plugin?)

00:17 - "We made the beat from scratch."
    00:22 - "We used a sample."

01:24 - "So you can probably talk about the drums that you did."
01:26 - "Yeah, like all the percussion and stuff, I put that on.

It make sense when you do generic pop/urban music, it's hard to keep the listener hooked more than 2 minutes when he/she has already heard that same song with the same vibe/same energy/same kind of lyrics/same sound/same kind of voice a thousand time before with minor variation.

That doesn't mean everything is bad, there's some great stuff with just one verse, but when music creation and distribution is accessible to everyone, then people find way to make the "sell" (which are just "plays" now) and so they work for the algorythme because the number of play are more important that the listening time (of course only if you go over the 30 seconds to make it count).
If the way algorythme work doesn't change, I wouldn't be surprise to see track under one minute without any verse becoming the norm in few years.

But that's not new, music duration as always been associated with its playing format, the 3mn single is because of the 45rpm vinyl limitation, the extended track that are more than 20mn couldn't really exist (as recording) without being cut before CD, and album with more that 10-12 track weren't the norm at all.

Everything, even track duration, is part of a cycling trend, and maybe that "no second verse" trend will initiate an opposite trend with very long track, just like progressive rock, extended disco/funk and early electronic came just after a period of short pop/soul tracks.

It's probably already there, just like underground techno, hardcore hip hop or early drum'n'bass were there at the same time as cheesy eurdodance and the Spice Girl :)

Who said that they are definitely organic listeners? We don't have a single proof.

There are lots of methods to manipulate the Spotify lists, amount of streams and montly listeners.

The people run full time business for it.

They're great!! Good fast technique to create their products. How much time can you spend on each track?

All in all, it's better this way: the shorter the songs, the less annoying it is

Modern songs written by modern songwriters and produced by modern producers . . . they probably can't think of a second verse. LOL

Cute girl creating light-hearted catchy music.

    Using the newest production techniques.
Playing the social media game perfectly.

Y2K aesthetic fused with modern trap/pop drums on top of a breakbeat sample, etheral pads.
    Pretty voice.
    Relatable non-threatening girl.

I understand why she have success.

Gens Y,Z and X are demoralized by propaganda for over 30 years.
Their attention span has been pulverized by Vine, Snapchat and Tik Tok hence the short format.
Economy is fucked, Planet is fucked.

    Core values have been destroyed.
There is a lonely epidemic affecting both men and women.
Young people don't think they have any future so they just want to have fun for the time being and enjoy themselves.

Her music brings a little fun escape from reality to people that are listening to it.
She talks about love and relationships in a melancolic and nostalgic way but she does not indulges in self pity, auto-destruction or vulgarity.
While it may appears superficial, she is quite a lot more authentic than most artists out there.

Everything is a product in 2024.
I you do not have a good product, Majors are not interested in you, because they can't profit off of you.
You do not achieve mainstream success if you do not have something that fits the socio-cultural context of the current era.

She could never have imagined making it this big, she was just making music in her bedroom with the help of her brother.
Her music still have that independent feels to it, it's not overproduced.

While it's a mix of a lot of different things from the 2000's re-interpreted within the new Y2K trend happening as part of the 20 years cycle
    it's still fresh.

Girl have feelings, get rejected, makes a song about it.
    Nothing new.
    Sounds good.

Pops on Social media, have a career, opportunities to work and learn at the side of more established artists and talented audio ingeneers.
Hopefully she will develop and mature as an artist and don't get chewed up by the industry.
What ever people think about her, she's a star and have a dedicated fanbase that travels to see her featuring and headlining.

She has a positive outlook on life and makes the most of it.
It Always catch my attention when a girl produces what she performs, it's just not the norm.

    Happy for her.

While it's a little too consensual for me, I'm okay with it, it's cheeky music.
I can't picture myself listenning to Björk in the car with my girl that would be disasterous.

If they was ever a good and bad side of music she's in the clear with me.
You want to hear Trash music, listen to this :

Edit 1 : The question was "What do you think of modern songs with only one verse ?"

Feels a little short sometimes, probably designed to get more plays on streaming platforms, anyways I'd take a good one verse song over a 3 verses bad one anytime.

    Edit 2 : Here's my personal favorite :)

Fast soundbytes probably . . . no need for depth, i.e., second verse.

This part made me laugh too. lol Good stuff. If only all tutorial videos were as succinct!

"I've been asked many times before: 'How do you properly mix your kick and your bass?' Well, I put that on. Next week, I'll talk about how to get your vocals to sound CLEAR (Spoiler: I put that on)."

If you are able to articulate the message of the song in one verse I see no reason to worry...
Too many songs are characterized by too many superfluous words and verses imho.

Let's not confuse a rich girl who is still a child with "IDGAF this isn't Shakespeare" vibes with collective judgment of an entire generation as having low intelligence. If you can't see the forest for the trees, then what's point of a second verse to begin with.

Sometimes 16 seconds is all you need. (that's what she said)
Breaking conventions can be a great thing.

    This song near silent...
Like the shadow between my dream
    And awakening

My 5-7-5 haiku verse needs another...or perhaps just a musing texture of sound with a lo-fi trap groove to make it to 2:18? What can I say, I'm a teenage girl trapped in the hairy body of a 64 yo dude. Maybe I should open a Tic Tok account and reel in the dough! Can anyone refer me to a filter to facilitate the transformation for my homecoming debut?

My lyrics are more sophisticated, and carefully constructed for a modern audience that have limited attention spans.
