An interesting look at making do with your current system if it is actually performing as required. Along with some suggestions that could work for old & new systems alike.

Apple's so called "Pro" systems no longer seem to be offering any real Pro related features compared to their own previous products not to mention, what is available in the x86_x64 market.

Stumbled across this Mac lover calling out Apple.

 

Did he go over the 2 FW400 and 2 FW800 ports? Firewire audio interfaces are getting very inexpensive also.

Yeah, noticed influx of really affordable firerwire gear these days on local listings, seems like Apple abandoning firewire had something to do with that, Apogee Ensemble's, RME Fireface's and etc.

 

Just checked some listings. Not so affordable so far. Most units well above $500.00 US

 

Probably, those with great prices don't stay for long, there's always good deals popping out around holidays when people need spare cash and etc. Listings are probably something I do every day for years and I can see same ones still there, some folks don't have urge to sell, they want to get as much as they can or even inflate prices, others just want to get rid of something and prices usually corresponds to that.

 

RME are holding their value better than most other firewire audio interfaces. Also, anyone can ask whatever they want, that doesn't mean they will ever sell for those listings. I'm running my 5,1 to MOTU 828ES and I love it. So if I stumble upon a crazy good deal, I may consider it. I don't need another interface, and I am not actively looking for one at the moment.

The problem for sellers is obvious. They are not selling to anyone who do not understand the position the seller is in. If they are using a new Mac their FW device is nearly useless to them. They may as well be selling a boat anchor, and will eventually take whatever they can get. Look at some UAD Satellites.

I have absolutely no plan to stop using my Mac Pro 5,1. I love it, too. It needs a new GPU to be Metal compliant. I could possibly change my dual Xeons for faster, but like this guy says in the video, it's already fast enough for me. It never crashes, and it is absolutely dead silent. It uses server ECC memory, and it still has plenty of space if I wanted to add more drives to it. I could buy a brand new Mac, and my 5,1 is still not going anywhere. It is a beast. The guy who did this video knows what's up. If he wasn't using Final Cut, he probably wouldn't even be considering another computer. When you are rendering files, you minimize Logic; and just keep using it for other stuff. Dual CPUs is great for stability, but also for multitasking.
