Yup. I hoard those tutorial videos almost as badly as I hoard the plugins.
I made it 5 lessons into the Syntorial software learning basic synthesis. That was sometime last year I think. Haven't touched it since. I also paid for the update that just released this year. Because I'm totally gonna definitely for sure go through the entire synthesis lesson tomorrow. Yup.
    Speaking of learning stuff...

From Robert Babicz tutorials I saw him has all plugins ever made. So being VST junky not blocking him from making very good music. Creativity only matters.

There's another work methodology that I've seen that I think works - just use any old synth preset you can find quickly that approximates what you need so you can keep the creative flow going and then work on the actual sound later, which I guess would fit within my previous art analogy as sketching with colours, or impressionism. Maybe it would be a good idea to set up a song template with very basic sounds to that end - something like an orchestral symphonic template with a hundred or more basic instruments/synth presets might be good.

I think guitar amp sim plugins are a different beast though because the sound very much informs how you play.

Also, we’re not machines, we can’t absorb everything in every other area continuously, we need to mature concepts.

You can have “someone” shouting the right answers in your ears and follow orders and the second that “person” is not there you will not know how or what to do again. Until we internalize the process

:( There are some people who do not have your problem who may as well have it.
You certainly do not deserve it. Makes me very sad to hear this. :mates:

Thx for pointing me to these two plugins. Didn´t know them so far. For me as a production noob they give me some very good starting points. Searched for something like Drum Monkey for ages.

I did not read the entire thread, but the title of the thread resonates me with. For me, I started years ago, I just had FL STUDIO, I was happily making tracks with FL STUDIO stock instruments, untill one day someone told me "your sounds suck, learn to mix, get better synths" etcs I was like hmmmm so I got Nexus and Omnisphere and Addictive keys and Drummer program and some waves bundles

TBH, this should of been enough. I experimented with these and had fun, I made tracks it was fun, ppl were like "nice but ur mix still sucks" so I thought DANG why does my mix suck, GRR, so instead of learning to use what I have, I spent years searching for fairy dust compressors, UAD, PA alliance, Ozone, Automasting, Mastering the Mix, Match EQ, Loudness analyzers ETC......... There was a good few years I was barely doing anything in daw other then testing out plugins, what a waste of time lol.... Now for past year I been trying to weddle down my plugins to what I need and essentials, cause having so many options has caused me to stagnate and I feel really bad for it too. It's became a hoarding addiction almost OMG SOOTHE2??? MUST HAVE, whaaaaaaat gullflosss???? HUH tr racks black 76 is BETTER THAN CLA76?!??!? sigh lol honestly I'd like to tell the entire community of gearslutz to go f themselves for throwing me down this endless rabbit hole.

It seems most of us here have the same problem, way too many plugin options. Maybe this community could fix that by a consensus vote for a top five in every category, listed in a section of the forum that's updated semi-regularly as new plugins become available. I know how difficult it will be for people to agree and it will probably cause arguments but maybe there's a way around that too - no comments, just votes. If it could be achieved I for one would use it as a guide.

I asked ChatGPT for a list of the top 100 compressor plugins and it obliged. First it only gave 10 with the following text before and after the list:

    __________________
    Before...

'Creating a comprehensive list of the "best" compressor plugins for music production is challenging, as it largely depends on individual preferences, needs, and the type of music being produced. Additionally, the availability of new plugins and updates can change the landscape over time. Instead of providing a list of 100 plugins, here's a more manageable list of 10 popular and highly regarded compressor plugins across different categories:'

    After...

'Remember, the "best" compressor for your needs depends on your specific requirements and the sound you're aiming to achieve. It's a good idea to experiment with different compressors and find ones that fit your workflow and the characteristics of your music. Additionally, stay updated with new releases and advancements in the world of audio plugins, as the landscape is continually evolving.'

I then asked: Never the less, I would like a top 100 list, not a list of 10

    Before...

'Creating a comprehensive top 100 list of compressor plugins is quite challenging due to the vast number of options available, and preferences can vary widely among producers. However, I can provide you with a diverse list that includes popular choices across different categories. Keep in mind that this list is not in any specific order, and the effectiveness of a compressor depends on your specific needs and the context of your music production.'

    After...

'Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and new plugins are regularly released. Additionally, personal taste and workflow play a significant role in determining the "best" compressor for a specific situation. Always try out demos and choose tools that best suit your needs and preferences.'

I haven't posted the list it spewed out because it's probably too long for a single post here and it isn't necessary anyway, I just wanted to demonstrate that creating a list takes seconds. Also, it appears to have selected popular compressors, which you would expect. Obviously it makes valid points about different requirements of compressor plugins but there are probably ones that stand head and shoulders above others and they're the ones I'm interested in. I can't think of another way to filter the snake oil plugins from the good stuff than a peer voting system. While ChatGPT can remove much of the legwork in compiling lists for different types of plugins the next challenge is turning these lists into forum surveys.

I also download and hoard them, but I recognize it's an OCD thing. I rarely actually watch them, and even when I do, I every rarely learn anything. How many times do you need to watch somebody selecting their drum samples and setting up their drum busses?

And the bulk of them are actually terrible teachers. They might show you their workflow on one track, but they don't give much insight into why they make the decisions they make, or what the alternative choices might have seemed like.

I don't know that I've learned anything since the old school Rick Snoman videos from back in the day. And yet I keep hoarding, hoarding, ever hoarding.
