f*** micro$hit, if you will be forced to purchase subscription instead of license to install an operating system, the boundary will be crossed

That looks fancy (even though in practice I’m sure it is not). Is there any public guide to follow in order to get a debloated Windows like you did?

I think they tried to generate huge amounts of user interaction data for big data to form AI models.
To achieve this goal, it is necessary to generate as much data as possible - even data that seems unnecessary to us.
The fact that this is prohibited in many countries probably doesn't concern MS. :dunno:
Here in Germany, the principle of "data minimization" (Datensparsamkeit) applies. This means that (regardless of the customer's consent) only as much data may be collected as is absolutely necessary for processing the users action = Art. 77 DSGVO (Datenschutzgrundverordnung/European General Data Protection Regulation)
Everyone must abide by this. Everyone is equal, only some are more equal, such as the American Internet companies.
Of which MS has now become one. https://www.reuters.com/technology/microsoft-misses-quarterly-revenue-estimates-2023-01-24/
The cloud (Azure etc.) and MS365 are now the big profit motors, not the OS anymore.

The actions of the European authorities against the Internet companies may sometimes give the impression that the EU simply wants to obstruct them. In fact, however, this is important consumer protection.

Even now, defender is only for people who find their computer too fast. Just the perfect brake.

Windows has now become the "enemy in our bed". Who needs viruses when there is Windows?! Unfortunately, the majority of users - and they (the vast majority) are the ones who matter - are technically too illiterate to understand and change this.

There's builds online for different use cases for you to dl. If you're paranoid, there's plenty step by step guides on youtube that can be found easily. Good luck.

I'm lucky that I have a friend who is a wizard with this stuff so he made me a build according to my needs. Installing Win 11 and all my software (DAW, plugins, ect) came in at under 4GB. I haven't had any problems at all but this PC is dedicated to my production needs and nothing more so I haven't tested it beyond that.

Ye, thats not possible. More like 40GB. Windows 11 itself has at least 15-17GB if you remove everything but the files neccessary to run it properly. The windows image can be compressed down to under 4GB if you use esd compression but the installed OS will take about 4-5 times of that space.

I assure you it is and I'm running it right now. Look it up if you don't believe me. There are even smaller builds. I saw one of Win 11 that is around 2.8GB if I remember right. I've seen even smaller builds of Win 10.

Of course you can strip down the OS to boot and only copy some files or start @ console or a restore prog. But I doubt to make it a full fleged OS like Linux of the same or even nearly the same size. Even for a audio only OS I would need drivers, C runtimes and Net frameworks of different versions.
If I had to reload all this later, it would be self-deception

Here is a Win 11 "micro build" running on a potato.

    Screen Shot 2023-12-05 at 1.58.29 AM.png

Here is my build, boot on USB. The installer has several options: like do I want to install MS Defender or MS Store, among other stuff. It also has choice of firewall (a few freeware choices), browser (Firefox), several themes to choose from (and like 10 desktop pics for each), a dock if you want it (like macOS, with different styles to choose from), translucent windows option, and several utilities.

Oh, my friend made the installer look like a Macintosh 128K. Pretty cool.

This runs all my audio stuff flawlessly and the OS is super fast.

On another machine I have a similar build, slightly smaller, and so far it's run every game I've thrown at it. Of course I had to DL and install all the typical junk you need to run games. I wouldn't game any other way now.

I refuse to follow the hamster wheel upgrade path. Audio hardware makers also follow their darklord's commands. I have some very old, (in computer years), hardware and software that cost me plenty back in the day. Am I going to toss it because my latest pc is not compatible? HELL NO. Used pc's are cheap as chips. I just rebuild/refurb cheap off lease corporate machines FOR my "outdated" hardware and software. As so Microsoft's latest trend which, as was pointed out, is starting to smell like a rotten Apple....LOL....there are, thankfully, reverse engineers like FB Conan releasing ultra-lite versions of 10 & 11 with all the bloat and spyware stripped out. Those, (and Linux), are all I use these days. MS & Apple can bite my shiny metal ass!!

Well... Every other Windows version is usually good... XP good. Vista bad. 7 good. 8 terrible. 10 good. 11 bad.
12 should be a lot better than 11 hopefully.

I installed Windows 10 as soon as it went gold and I had regrets for the next two years. Win10 really wasn't in a release-ready state. It would crash every couple weeks on me for a looong time. 'Settings' is worse now than it was at release. Every time they add a new page to 'Settings', they end abandoning it in a half-broken, 'dude, I'm missing essential settings here' state because of MS' endless ADHD. Try removing a font in Win10 using the 'new' Settings instead of the old way. It's 20x slower, 10x harder to use, contains 10x more useless info. Same for most other stuff, like setting up DNS for your network. Absolute clown car.

IMO there's no 'bad Windows - good Windows' cycle.

A guide to make this kind of build would be very helpful. I’m interested in that for audio producing/engineering purposes too.
I dream of a very very stripped down version, the very bare minimum to run a DAW and plugins, with lowest latency.
    Thanks!

Ye, if you do a Windows Live installation (bootable from a usb stick as main disk), that size is possible.
Thats basically the recovery image with windows explorer as main UI (instead of a command line).

Those WinPE systems are nice for recovery of a broken OS or to boot your own windows on another PC
with some tools to reset passwords, browse in the net etc. but they're not good for music production,
design, video stuff etc. as a lot of programs just don't work correctly in that environment because
you cannot get the full potential out of your hardware.

Means yes, such an OS takes way less memory and cpu but it also isn't able to accomplish much more
    of your machines performance.

I can't speak to what you're saying. I don't have the expertise but like I said my buddy is who is a genius with this stuff built it for me specifically so I can run my DAW and hardware (CPU, GPU,RME, a few controllers) and it does that with flying colors but according to him it should run most 3rd party applications. He said it's Windows 11 23H2 Pro. (22631.2361) stripped of everything not needed to run my stuff.

For me it's blazing fast. Night and day compared to a "optimized for audio" full install of Windows 10 I had on my machine prior.

    To each their own.

I don't have such a guide sorry, I didn't build mine, but I know there are some guides on youtube. There's also many stripped down builds of both Win 10 and 11 online you can DL that will work for audio and much more. Just do some searching, google/youtube they're not hard to find.

I don't agree with this list, Windows Vista onwards are basically the same thing, but with increasing bloat and spyware. Windows 10 is far from "good" and Windows 7 was just a tweaked and facelifted Vista.
