I'm interested in designing GUIs but don't really know where to start or what software to use. You mentioned Photoshop and Figma. Are there other programs you use to design elements/animate the controls?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm just an 18 y/o who really likes UI design, so I might not be as well-versed in it as industry professionals, but here it is:

When I was 13, I download Sketch (used it on my mom's old laptop) and I just started trying to design apps and even logotypes. My first designs were meh, but with time I became better at it. Now I use Figma, which is practically a carbon copy of Sketch, except it has more features.

This skin was designed in Figma. I recreated most of the elements of the original layout and then started tweaking them, so it's more like I was just trying to find if it's better to use a solid color or a gradient in this or that part, what shadows I wanted - it's just trial and error most of the time.

The knobs though were mostly original ones, except I tweaked their look a bit and recoloured them in Pixelmator Pro (basically, Mac-native Photoshop).

About animating the knobs... You could do that in Photoshop using various plugins, but because I tweaked the original ones, I didn't have to do that. All I have to say is sometimes I just do it in perhaps a very inefficient way - I just mass-copy my design and place them over original buttons (this is what I did with ome project I'm working on and also my new redesign I'm working on for Waves classic plugins; I added HiDPI support to them too).

So yeah, UI design can be tedious sometimes, but it's worth it for the result. If you're starting out, Figma is a great tool. Don't forget to install plugins or download projects from the Figma community and just explore them. Photoshop is something I'd use where Figma is lacking, but for now, I'd just say go with Figma.

Honestly, I just tried it and it's extremely difficult. I really don't want to create a skin for it, I'd rather create new ones for CLA Vocals/Guitars etc. H-Delay and Renaissance Series.

I'll definitely check out Figma and look at using Photoshop as well. I had a hard time finding YouTube tutorials about making VST skins and GUI designs for audio plugins.

People might be really interested in you showing off your design process on YouTube. It doesn't seem there's a lot of content regarding that type of work.

Yeah, plugin GUI creation is a very limited space. Not a lot of people do it at all, but those who do, aren't that interested in making videos about it, because of how niche this topic is. I could see myself doing it though, although I am afraid I would get some offensive comments about my workflow hahaha.
