    Haven't posted for a while.

Set myself a challenge of finishing a track from start to finish in two hours this morning.

Very rough and ready (especially with the borrowed vocals) but certainly focuses the workflow.

Will listen back later and see if it's worth refining.

    ********** UPDATE ********************

So.... removed the Joy Division vocals... they were jarring with me.

Undoubtedly someone will say there were the best parts.

    ****** UPDATE 2 ******************

    Completely ditched the vocals...

Added some transitions, panning, levels, ear candy.

30 minutes of editing to tweak the vocal parts.

I was pleased with the general groove.
No real mixing yet. Panning, Sidechaining, Levels, or transitions (or even hi hats!)

Like it. Sounds great on my 12 year old Lenovo laptop with the worst speakers known to man. Good job!

Ah yes... should have said the Janet Jackson vocals.

In retrospect, it was a useful exercise.... if not a great track.

Going from an 8 bar loop with multiple parts to an arrangement always seems like an arduous task.

If you follow the "duplicate then delete" technique then you now have an arrangement but the track is generally crap.
(i.e. the first version I posted).

But practising that technique I imagine would make that part of the task less of an effort.

Turning the crap track into something less crap is always the tricky bit.

Remembering to focus on transitions between each section can elevate the track and I think that's where I got to with this one.

Personally I usually believe vocals on a track are key to making it stand out.

The three lots of vocals I tried with this track were simply the first I came across that were in key with the track.

Unfortunately this is where sticking a known accapella on your track instantly downgrades your track to a "poor" mashup/remix.

Vocal phrases from sample packs are usually also crap, and I'm not the greatest fan of chopping a vocal up so that you're just left with a string of "ah-ooh-ee-ah" nonsense.

Anyhow this is usually where I lose interest and move onto the next track.
