    Hi

I am wanting to output calibration patterns from my Surface Pro 7, as well as general video playback. This
has no HDMI outputs of its own, but can output video via USB-C.

Can anyone recommend a suitable adapter, preferably supporting 4K with HDMI 2.1 (or at least 2.0b) and HDCP 2.2.

I am after a super reliable device, there seems to be a lot of shoddy products out there.

You won't be getting HDMI 2.1 without an HDMI 2.1 output and display with an HDMI 2.1 input.
You'll be using DisplayPort converted to HDMI over a 10Gbps connection and any old USB-C to HDMI cable will do.

I work for ViewSonic and use a Surface 7 at work every day connected to a pair of ViewSonic displays, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and specs aren't happening. Get a $10 USB-C to HDMI cable from Cable Matters, you can't go wrong there.

A hub would be an idea for something very reliable. This linked kind, is the last type you want. They plug directly into the device ports, they can wiggle causing sporadic connection, and they can even damage the ports of your device. Most of them cannot use an external power source either. They also are a bad choice for laptops, unless you just need them for a minimal period of use. They are good if mainly you use a laptop at work and only occasionally need to share your screen with someone, to keep them from coming behind your desk and looking over your shoulder. For more than that I would pass.

i just looked for something. maybe a usb-c hub in itself would be fine too (not like the ones i did show, but the normal ones you would see)

oh you've got the right idea because a standard type of hub gets expensive pretty quick comparatively. Those are cool if you travel with your laptop so you have that added connectivity in a pinch for 20 bucks. I've had a number of them over the years for that kind of purpose, but they all eventually die randomly. I had one on my macbook and it was actually getting hot to the touch. There are other ones in the same price range which just have a short usb-c cable separating them and the device which don't tug on the device ports the same way. The ones that plug in directly need to sit flush up against the side of the connected device and they almost never do. Being plugged into the ports actually gives it leverage to screw up the port instead of the cable just pulling free.

Oh yeah those little hubs that plug right in suck, I would NOT recommend one. We have one that we use with our MacBooks at the office and I fucking hate that thing. Not only does it flap around on the side (Im waiting for those USB-C plugs to break any day now), you have to pay attention to the ports included on it, because they are usually limited due to the size. The one we have is some random one off Amazon, has two or three USB-C ports, but only ONE does power delivery and display. If I have to grab the MacBook to test something, I have to decide whether I want to power the laptop or use a display (hopefully no ones left the MacBook running and draining before hand). If you've got a display that does power delivery, great, but not so great when you need both..

A USB-C dock would be a good idea, maybe one of the Pluggables, or even the Kensingtons. I wish I had one at work because having my Surface tied to my displays with the USB-C port, leaves me one single USB-A port for everything else.

Yes there are a lot of shady Devices on the net. I use this one https://www.amazon.de/Baseus-Adapter-5in1-USB-C-HDMI/dp/B0B46PTFQD very nice Design and you get an extra power input and 3 usb 3.0 ports and an HDMI port which can output 4K@60Hz. I'm using it since 1 1/2 Years intense as Power input and to connect my external HDD's and sometimes to connect via HDMI as im using a Dell Surface which also got no HDMI port. Works Flawless never had any Problems with it.

And there is a Second option without cable if you own an Amazon Firestick you can connect your Surface wireless via Network to it to share your Display also if you install VLC on it you can share your Videos via SMB and so there would be no need for any cable.

That tiny little cable shown in the image that you posted keeps the little hub a few inches away from the chassis of the device. It's a tiny difference in the "hub", and usually only costs a few bucks more. The only real downside to either of them is connecting external monitors because most have no external power source. The one I currently use is part number UCN3278. Gigabit ethernet, 3 x hdmi, and it even has an SD card reader. It's 80 bucks, but I have had this one for years now. I'm sure it will still die without any warning, because they all do.

The One i'm using operates as charger as well you plug in your normal USB-C Charging Cable into the Hub so you don't need to use another USB-C port for loading your device. Also if not used there is a space where you can put in the USB-C cable from the Hub so no dust comes in. I used the one which i got with my dell Surface before but this one didn't operate as an Charger.
