I never tried Death & Darkness but looks like it's among the most loved SDX here, will definitely give a try.

about the Progressive SDX/EZX that should be hyped mainly because of Forester Savell, probably at a certain time, he is a big name on that sub-genre I guess. Not really familiar with all his work, I know he worked with Animal As Leader, I have listened to Karnivool's Sound Awake upon its release, quite popular. Good sounding album that. Funny that it gets 0 vote here the Progressive SDX. lol

 

I think SD3 can hold up really well even when tuned extreme or mix & match kits but it will change the whole ambient vibe of the overall drum sound which understandable and can't be helped. I would like to preserve the whole room tone aesthetic for some reason. It's one of the thing I love about SD3 and a slight change in that would be counter productive to what I'm trying to achieve. Well, it put limitation on me, but what can I say, just pick the next preset. Lol.

 

D&D really is good, and works across genres. Heck, I should reload it. It probably suits what I'm doing right now better than what I'm using actually... Gah, now I've got to find out.

 

Jeez that's a tough vote! I voted for Fields Of Rock and Custom & Vintage, but I could've easily voted for Decades or Hansa or the stock library instead, among others.

Custom & Vintage got my vote cos it used to be my go to but I never see anyone talk about it. I guess cos it's old. But there's great sounds on there. It's more raw and dry than the newer libraries but that's why I like it. But the biggest thing I like about it is just simply the drum curation. They chose cool drums.

The thing I find with SDX is that with each library there's like 2 kits or 5 presets that I REALLY like per library, and then the rest isn't relevant to my tastes. So you end up using a lot of HD storage just for a few drum sounds. Not super efficient. Maybe I need to dig in a little deeper into mutating my sounds a bit more though.

My bigger turn-off with SD is that a lot of it can sound a little generic. It's all the usual mic techniques. I wanna hear more experimental miking techniques. For that reason I haven't used SD since I got Tympo by Teletone. That thing is under 1GB and sounds sooo so so so so tasty, right out of the box.

Love SD though, I first started using it in 2011, and I used it on my debut EP (DM me if you wanna hear it, it's some psychedelic math-rock post-rock electronica sorta stuff, I guess), and as far as playability there's nothing better I've found. It sounds like a real kit when you play it (I didn't have the same feeling when playing on EZX libraries). It's just a bit hard to justify the HD space now. I don't need 25 ambient mics. But if you're trying to make a "real band" sound via midi then superior drummer can't be beat.

 

Area 33 because it allows so much choice.
All the others are great for the sounds, but for a starting template on which to work, it does NO GOOD to only have one tom slot avaliable.
Area 33 might be overkill, but it is better than underkill.
