You pretty much just described what DJing is all about. Someone playing a media and moving from side to side.

Im obviously talking about the basics seen from a fan perspective.

That and the colour of his t-shirt.

It doesn't matter which computer is playing the music. The onboard computers on the pioneer decks, a laptop on the side, or a phone.

I would say that I wouldn't want a phone for this, just because its such a small interface for browsing tracks.

But honestly I expected that by now my primary computer for DJing would be an iPad, that's the best interface for the only thing I do directly on the computer - picking tracks.

But nobody's stuck the landing there, there's no good combo of software and hardware.

You perform your DJing on hardware. you want the hardware to be as big as possible, roomy, because you want your muscle memory to do the work. That way you don't need to stare at the gear all the time.

This is why we're not using laptops or tablets directly much, you don't want to bind your eyes to a small spot and away from the people you're playing for. You'll end up bunching up your body too.

I'm a big Traktor fanboy, but sometimes I'll HID connect a couple of Pioneer CDJs on either side of the S4 mk3, more room to flex, plus it looks better.

I also have a couple of Traktor D2 controllers that I keep just to browse, because they have nice screens which the S4 mk3 does not.

My phone is powerful enough to run this setup, but the software isn't there, Traktor Pro is desktop only, mobile Traktor is severely limited. And 3rd party DJ software doesn't play well with S4 mk3, unfortunately.

He said he plays with 4 decks on his phone, Reloop Mixtour can handle only 2 decks, so it's pretty impossible to mix 4 decks with that controller.

Bring phone, hook it up, press play, raise hands for 1 hour or so.... cash 10k or more. I like it. I have been training in the gym for years already, to raise my arms for hours on end. My future looks bright!
But in all seriousness, the 'DJ-ing' is totally over rated these days. You need close to no skills, the software does everything for you. That's why I think you see the change of parties/festivals that it's more about the experience as a whole and less and less about the artist (or his/her performance). Being present in the same room, seeing him/her push a button is enough for the young kids these days, as long as there is massive stage with fireworks and what not.... I am getting old haha

I love the sound of mp3s from the late 90s to very early 2000s. Not joking at all. They give me a similar buzz to the sound of cassettes. Especially sub 128k rips.
I started downloading in the late 90s, 128k mp3s were the highest quality rips you could find, often it was like 56k.
And... I upgraded my mp3 collection to new lossless rips, and there are a few tracks that just sound worse. Like... on a whole, mp3s on a large loud soundsystem just torture your ears. But a few tracks really became better thanks to the compression.
    I hope I don't have to state that I'm not advocating DJing mp3 files. I'm not. But I don't fully hate mp3s.

The Image of the DJ was already a part of it for a long time. I remember when in the early 2000's a Tour DJ from Snoop Doog was at our youth house and he did scratches with his tounge and shoe and it was an incredible Perfomance (I bet most of todays DJ's could not do this Scratches with their hands). But he had also amazing Mixing Techniques and the Music matched the whole vibe. When i went to an Disco the Last time the mix was boring as hell the DJ could not do requests, because he did not know and have the Songs and he looked like he was on Socials half of the Performance.

By the way there is nothing wrong with a phone (Also a Tablet would be the better option Display Size wise), because the Highend ones outpower most low - mid range Laptops nowadays. But Scratching on Vinyl and Scratching on a Digital Turntable is not the same Feeling.

Back in the Day DJ Jazzy Jeff was way more than someone playing a media and moving from side to side for Will Smith. Its just the era right now which does it like this. Also DJing is around 100 years old and was first performed by Radio Announcers. Also there are many different types of DJ's which have different approches in what they want to archive.
