Why isn't an "evil Genius" an oxymoron?

Ted Kaczynski (the unabomber), Edmund Kemper, Jeffrey Dahmer and Charlene Gallego are just some examples of serial killers with "genius level IQ" (above 140).

You could argue that many in the Nazi regime were evil geniuses, like Himmler and Goebbels, and of course Hitler himself.

Charles Manson probably didn't have a high IQ, but his ability to manipulate other people to act out his evil plans were definitely genius in some deranged and psychotic way.

An oxymoron is simply a phrase or figure of speech that is itself contradictory. Awfully good, old news, deafening silence, living dead, lead balloon are just some examples. "Evil virtues" and "incompetent genius" are oxymorons, but "evil genius" is not an oxymoron.

Ya I know what those words mean...

Feels like I'm talking to the "average redditor"

In my opinion some cultures reward evil as long as its "genius" whether it be a documentary, adding "gate" to it and other things.

The men mentioned apart from the mustache man are famous. Why? That's wrong

In my opinion, all cultures do this to different degrees / in different forms. There is a cult of success in life through whatever means are acceptable.

Are you willing to throw your colleagues under the bus for the sake of your gain? In many cultures, the answer would be "why wouldn't you, are you stupid??" - it's expected of you. Ruthlessness is not a fault, it's a quality!

Hiring someone's nephew as a favour, paying bribes small and big? Common practice in many places - it's just the smart thing to do. Merit means far less than your teachers would like you to believe.

Elimination of opponents, including by violent means? So long as you don't get caught, you're just being smarter than them, right?

This is taken to absurd levels when big corporations do the same thing.

Bribe politicians by the billions, hire their sons and daughters? Smart business.

Pay to have an undesirable politician or journalist killed? Cheaper than cleaning up the environmental mess you made - smart business, right?

I am assuming this is a serious question. I see why it has been asked and @Lois Lane nailed one aspect, that it is pretty much only two words strung together.

Analytically though, everyone has heard the saying "A fine line between genius and insanity" ?
There is apparently from reading a little on it, an Intelligence Quotient level above 165 where the person can become many things - Bady over-summarised - They can become a super-intelligent being with zero social skills, or a discovery expert like Stephen Hawking or at worst, a sociopathic, psychopath with the tendency to apply their skills to the persecution of others (in many forms); or, at the expense of others.

"Evil Genius" is the latter and the worst kind of genius. I do not believe it is an oxymoron per se, but more the worst type of intellect described in two words and it falls short in its description.

N.B - An evil moron that millions believe is a genius is far more dangerous because it tells us how many stupid people there are in the world.

Psychopaths may or may not be highly intelligent, just like the rest of us.

Evil Geniuses, often abbreviated as EG, is one of the oldest North American professional gaming organisations. Founded in 1999, EG is known to have highly successful players in every competitive game they feature and is considered by many to be one of the most premier gaming organisations that exist today.

I think what you are maybe trying to get at is the fact that humans are drawn to negativity. If so, then this is due to our brains being hardwired through evolution to focus on the negative. Traced back to prehistoric days, primitive man had to be able to register threats to avoid danger and increase survival rates. Individuals who were more attuned to danger (negative stimuli) stayed alive longer and passed on their genes. Now, thanks to technology, it's so easy for us to be very attuned to all kinds of negativity and reinforce our negative biases. The negativity bias is the tendency for humans to pay more attention, or give more weight to negative experiences over neutral or positive experiences. Even when negative experiences are inconsequential, humans tend to focus on the negative... But despite all this, don't let any type of genius or oxymoron stress you out! Remain positive and continue to always ask questions:wink:
