I'm not sure what to add to that title . . . but if someone was looking for straight-up recording/tracking with the intention of exporting stems . . . I think MixPad support 3rd Party Plugins and MIDI, which might make it more useful than Audacity and Audition in some respects . . .

    Any thoughts?

if you want free, then Garageband is,
if you want versatility, then just use Reaper

Not everything NCH software are poop poop poop... :bleh:

Crescendo Masters is a good software to start writing music.
Certainly 'Finale' is unattainable... but Crescendo Masters is a good first proposition for a beginner and also works well & easy on guitar chord grids.
Just to start writing the first scores in the life and then, once you've learned the job, move on to Finale. :winker:

    My 5 cents

I wish I could get by with GarageBand . . . other artists have limited themselves to that DAW and put out some hit songs. But every time I try to get going, I am limited by the metering and the painful workarounds to edit the audio . . . even finding the files to edit on an external editor. Logic is a bloated mess for the likes of me, offering WAY too many things that I would never use. It's got a clean interface, but then . . .
So, I thought I'd take a peek at this and see what others, who I respect, think. ;-)
I have another DAW that I really like, but being an equipment junkie, I always have one eye open for the next fix!
