Thought on Diva

Discussion in 'Software' started by Vincent Price, Aug 22, 2023.

  1. I don't seem to be able to find the preset ladder....anyone know if it is part of another library that needs to be downloaded?

As long as it's designed by Adrian Newey (which are all but two of them iirc), it's a masterpiece

it is in your library, so it is probably hidden folder in your Finder.

    1. Click 'Go' in the Finder menu bar, and hold down the 'Option' (Alt) key.
    2. The Library entry now appears in the Finder > Go menu.
    3. Clicking Library directly opens the hidden User Library folder in a new Finder window.
Search in the new Finder window for Diva and you should see resulting folders. You may have it in Library/Application Support/u-he/Diva or maybe even someplace else. :)

darn, maybe ive been missing out not testing 3rd party presets, the preset demo that came with Mona was pretty impressive.

Many of divas stock presets i deleted straight away, a loooot of useless garbage to me at least

I like the sound of it, I am disturbed by the CPU use but, I find Synapse Audio Dune sounds (almost) as good for a fraction of the CPU.
And I'm using an old laptop so I can't afford to be using CPU hogs.
I rate all the U-HE stuff tbh

Thought on diva: same sterile hollow ugly mids grainy analogue mocking sound as other 300 emulations.Best feature: the overhype and now the best skin, it seems. Even Repro from the same dev sounds more 'analogue'. Synapse and Gforce, while also struggling to emulate something, are a class higher. And remember, at this level my thought is as good as yours.

For specifically emulating a Mini I prefer Softube Model 72 but all in all I still love Diva.

Lately I'm more digging Hive, especially for melodic techno, but Diva is there too, not far behind... used Zebra for years and maybe use few really amazing sounds from Joseph Hollo, but it's not much used, there's some RePro from time to time too, really love U He stuff and sound designers around them.

Tried it and dumped it. This thing no matter how long it has been around is not ready for prime time. The coding is garbage and needs to be severely optimized. It wont even run non-glitchy on a high powered 16 core desktop workstation. Dumbing it down doesn't make any sense - you're using a half-synth at that point. Serum does what this does and does it without dumbing down, and glitch-free, with low latency.

One more observation as well... This being such a supposedly semi-well known dev they don't even provide the un-installer infrastructure to get rid of it. Not very professional IMO... Had to get rid of it all manually...
    two thumbs down...

Compared some Diva & Osirus presets recently and I was kind of expecting Osirus to blow it away. But Diva hung in there for the most part. Also just realized how plastic the Virus can sound at times. It can still do Moog sounds better than Diva though.

My only real issue with Diva was that I could never get it to sit in the mix right. Once I started using Osirus my mixes sounded instantly better.

Juno/Jupiter don't have a supersaw OSC, that's JP8000/8080, just to not spread incorrect information

I never flowed with Diva, nor Diva with me. I do own both Zebra and Repro. I love making pads with Repro and enjoy the routing that Zebra affords as well as the sound. That cool new Diva skin that I saw on the sister site piques my interest and would probably help with the flow, though I'm not gonna fork over 200 bucks for the plugin and gui on a maybe and have them languish in state in my plugin folder. I use Synapse Legend when want that Moogy thang.

Probably best synth on the market for non-linear behavior emulation. Also the filters are insanely good.

Used to be top dog when it came to Moog emulations. Now it's still among the best but other contenders (some of which came out almost ten years later, btw) are definitely up there too. If I just want that phat Moog sound I'll go with The Legend or Minimonsta2 (probably the best yet).

However, Diva offers a LOT more than those two. And it's still a simple synth compared to other u-he stuff.

Speaking of which, why is there so little love for Bazille? It's one of the most unique synth plugins out there, can do sounds that no other can, encourages and rewards crazy experimentation, fun to use... But you NEVER hear it in discussions.

Diva is very good indeed, I bought it when it was half price via NI, agreed most of the included presets may not have the wow factor some people look for, but third party presets are amazing.
The worst part of the preset manager in Diva is having no ability to rename the "Mark as Favourite 1, Favourite 2" etc, silly oversight from the developer, can't understand why they can't release an update quickly to fix it.
Depending on the music you make, Dune 3 is brilliant, and I think Reveal Sound Spire is the best ready to use VST out there, before adding the thousands of top quality preset banks on top, one for preset whores!

Bazille is highly underrated. I think it's partly due to the more complicated architecture making it not as easy to learn, as well as the relative lack of third-party soundsets.

It really excels at weird sounds, so instead of endlessly moving cables around with little clue what I'm doing, I just use a Reaper script to randomize the parameters (with some exclusions that are most likely to make it sound bad.) Why so many developers fail to include (smart) randomization is a mystery to me.

One other thing I think Diva misses is a good sequencer. Every u-he synth comes with a good sequencer (although Arturia beats everyone else in this game), why doesn't Diva have one? The arpeggiator is good but still.

Yeah I think people get a bit intimidated by its modular nature. Also, it excels at weird sounds like you said, so it's understandable that it's not the first go-to if you're looking for more "musical" stuff -although it can do more traditional sounds just as well.

It's like a specialized Eurorack system rolled into one.

I do enjoy making my own patches, if nothing it teaches me about synthesis, but I agree that a randomization option would be awesome, especially if you could dial in different amounts for different parameters.

You can load it then use it as a Standalone using vPlayer or Blue Cat Patchwork....
