Hi guys! Once again, a challenge:
Take my client's/friend's mix from a few years back and bring it into 2023 with some good plugin toys and lots (I hope) of up-to-date know-how. The original mix was mastered by me, but the present one was edited track by track and remastered by me as well. Threw in a talk-box style guitar solo where I thought it needed it as well. Sadly, he opted to not go for the 'tower of power' horn section I tried out. Oh well, customer's always right, yeah?

Well you're version has a clarity that isn't fond in the older recording. There are some bits of the older version I do appreciate more, the opening instrumental section before the vocals come in the first time and a few other instrumental cuts here and there, but overall your newer version is benefiting from your years of experience and newer processes is.

I would have made a few different choices with reverbs and FX but I applaud your decision to sink the voice into the song much more than it was on the original.

It would be cool if you find a middle ground, bcz no matter how much less of top end or air it has the client´s mix is pretty easy to listen to

 

The client mix is far superior, is tighter, better low end, more punch and the most important part it has character.

prefer the "Client Mix" version for a lot of obvious reasons already mentioned above.

 

Thanks everyone! I feel the same in that there are elements of the original mix and master I liked more. But 'the client is always right' and I mixed according to his interests and preferences.
