About TAL-Chorus [solved]

    Hi everyone! I hope you are doing well.
    I come today with a new question.
    How should I use TAL-Chorus-LX plugin? as a send or as an insert?
    I want to apply it on a outrun synthwave bassline.

    could be one or the other, you are the judge. First use it as SEND and if you find you are sending multiple instruments to it see how they are working together. Also, try to use it as an INSERT only appropriate mix amount on each of the instruments and listen, are they doing better that way.

    pick the one that sound good to you. There's no definite way to do stuff, some might work for you or against you. Try all, it will only take 10 minutes max to set it up with copy+paste plugin.

    1) make sure to compare it on and off with other time based plugin like Reverbs, Delay and such, pay attention if there's any phase cancellation happening or worse you could end up with one big mono which is a phenomena when everything becomes too wide because of their phase interaction but your track sounds like a mono track.

    2) they are 2 common reasons people use chorus,
    - for obvious chorusing sound, where the chorus is count as part of the sound, in this case, it's always better to use chorus plugin as an INSERT
    - as widening tool, subtle chorus as Stereo Imaging tool to make sound a little wider, this is usually done as SEND and shared between multiple instrument.

    In your case of sending a bass track to it, INSERT seems okay, but I'd suggest using SEND but place an EQ with HPF at around maybe 150-100Hz before the Chorus so that the lowest frequency part of the bass isn't affected and remains center and punchy when everything blends back together. Turn the EQ on an off and compare which one do you like in a full mix context too, no right answer for this.

    If you want wide low end bass there's different plugin for it, not Chorus.

    If you are widening the Bass track with chorus not for obvious chorusing effect, take a look at the Dimension D emulation plugin which is a better choice. TAL Chorus is superb for obvious 80s chorusing sound for synth tho.

    Well it was designed to be inside the original instrument, so i guess the closest thing to it's intended use would be as an insert. Synthwave obviously plays with 80s sounds so logically you would want to use it as part of a synth...in theory.

    In reality, What Mr.Dude says is very true. All in all it's just a chorus plugin, but i think it's way too limited to be used outside of it's "comfort zone" and you're probably better off choosing something else if you want a send chorus. You should still try though.

    Also using it as an insert you avoid using an extra track, which could be nice.

    All true. I would try both send/insert and see which i like more; but if I were to pre-guess I would end up with it as a send fx on a bass synth, and it would be a coin flip on other types of parts. And I'd maybe end up using the Arturia Juno chorus instead, or an A/B with the Roland. But I think certain things really need to be done "correctly" like compression; whereas more creative FX like Chorus it seems like there is much more room to take artistic license to do whatever fits the track best. Some people really care about emulations' accuracy, and i'm not really one of them.

    If I really couldn't decide, or I was shopping; I might even look up some YT shootout and see what someone else has to say.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

    Well, I've tested both and a the end of the day, I like more the results of SEND.
    However it's true that INSERT would be closer to an authentic and original sound, but I would like to have more control over a specific signal to get better results.
    Now that I know that a SEND is not an incorrect option, I will pick that one.
