The point is that from the American POV there was no longer a legitimate reason to drop the bomb after Hitler had been defeated. The whole exercise was about showcasing military might, not mainly to Imperial Japan, but to the Soviet Union, the main contender of the USA outside of the Anglo-American / western camp after Nazi Germany has been defeated.

Also, I wonder when does mass murder become despicable genocide? It seems killing 200.000 Japanese doesn't consitute genocide in American history books, neither does killing millions of Vietnames peasants. So is there a certain number of casualties where genocide becomes worthy of being condemned and called out? Or does it depend on the phenotype of the victims?

 

I'm not taking sides neither justifying anything. I'm just saying the same would have applied to another country in similar circumstances. As sad as it is.

 

Oops, you guys are right (a couple people pointed it out).. I clearly got my timeline a bit mixed. I can agree that the necessity to use the bombs to get Japan to surrender are at least debatable - and I don't really have a strong stance there either way, but I do also have a tough time justifying the death of so many innocents. I basically mistook the importance of winning the race in developing the atomic bomb (which definitely was quite important) for the use of them. My mistake.

 

Just a reminder that Oppenheimer and his whole team thought that there was a possibility that their atomic bomb would ignite the whole planet on fire and destroy the whole world.

Yet he gave the order to trigger the bomb at the Trinity site in New Mexico.

the point you are missing is that absolutely EVERYTHING released by the u.s entertainment industry is already a product modeled and retouched to comply with the message of u.s military empire and to forward its agenda, nothing that could fundamentally question it would get invested in or get released by the mainstream or the today inexistent indie scene (if you want to have a carrier as a producer, actor or studio of course lol). these are everlasting policy declarations from the establishment across administrations.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military–entertainment_complex)

Nolan, at least, does this on purpose. He did it successfully IMO in certain scenes in Tenet and Dunkirk. In certain scenes in Tenet (which I didn't see in IMAX just watched with my hd600s) it fails terribly. good scene raiding the vault, bad sailing missing dialogue. anyway- the IMAX pushes that even further but a lot of that is Nolan,he's discussed it his mixing choices.

as too the ongoing debate about history and art- lmao. a few of you have it right- history and art are complex as fuck and as a soon as you get away from facts and objective qualities you're by definition in subjective territory. Amazing how many SUPPOSED ARTISTS have black and white opinions on such terribly complicated issues of, like the geopolitics of a world war. sure the big picture is easy, axis bad allies good- war fucking sucks beyond that. Are the British terrible for letting their own men die to not let the enemy side know they had cracked the Enigma Code? Was that the lesser of two evils? Is it fair to look through the lense of history and judge people from a modern day standard with the knowledge we have?

actually me(we)'re one of those folks enjoying listening to soundtracks before seeing the movies,
and frankly, Oppenheimer soundtracks is so boring compared to Tenet soundtrack (which was also composed by Ludwig's Göransson,

in such circumstance, let's assume the movie is so boring that composer had no clear/strong idea on what to create to accompany the motion picture, as seen with for ex. Dune soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, which is also so boring...

I can't yet judge the movie, but according to unbiased reviews it seems even Nolan can't make an average documentary an extraordinary movie

 

I have my own very scientifically calibrated meter to know if it's a boring movie or not.

If I fall asleep on the movie, then I can put a stamp of mild to very boring on it.

I stayed awake the whole movie and was starting to have a panic attack at some point.

agreed 10000 times on the Zimmer Dune soundtrack. I'm a denis fanboy and that was a misstep imo. all the wailing brought me back to earth everytime, circa Russel Crowe Roman days.

lol hadnt see those reviews- one of the reasons I'm adamant about seeing this in the IMAX is because that's what I kinda suspected. Without the giant screen and the volume of actual explosions... I'd rather hear feynman stories

the tenet soundtrack, actors and explosions were the only things I liked the first time I saw Tenet. now I'm basically an apologist for the movie. that vault scene is SO good, the arp in that scene crept into my personal music vocab. I'll watch this in theater, then decide whether I'll listen to it again or just Phillip glasses glassworks, which is my go to for repetitive music like this seems to be. I'm boring why change what works for you when it comes to feeling good?

Martel: your review makes me again, NEED to see this in the imax! question though- do you think if you had say..... watched a cam version on a tablet your review would be the same? heh heh I'm just being an asshole and trying to double down on one of my previous arguments. some shit is more amusement park ride than fine art, and occasionally you get specimens that are both. this seemed like it wanted to be a documentary amusement park ride.... which is a great idea tbf.

I watched the ''slottimesindia.com'' cam version on a streaming platform ( or tried to ) and fell asleep on it. So that's for the scientific part that you're asking about.haha

To play the devil advocate, I would have probably fell asleep on Koyaanisqati on a tablet as well.

The Oppenheimer movie was not remotely on the same league as Glass greatest OST but it had something very unconventional about it. An undeniable sense of urgency (Much more urgent then Koyaanisqati) which is what triggered that ''anxiety attack'' while I was in the movie theatre. Not the loudness of the music but its cadence with the VERY fast paced events going on one after the other led by (like Mr. Glass opus) an arpeggiated insane synth sometime.

Both in conjunction make this movie what it is.

The acting of Cillian Murphy was good at best. There was not much to play with anyways but the story line was ....fidgety. YES, that's it !! Fidgety !!! It fucks with your mind and before you can process what just happened you're already into something else that is equally big.

And that goes on, and on and on and on.

You get about 2 or 3 ''slow part'' (or about) or lets just say, more conventional story telling 20 minutes part but most of the rest is like racing through the mind of an ADHD person but keeping it coherent.

Talking of which, to whomever critic that said that it is hard to follow need to go see a psychiatrist. I'm not trying to insult anyone but even though it was heart racing for the most part, everything was VERY VERY precisely put together and there was no constant change of time. Or maybe they should stick to Barbie as apparently its aimed at more simple minded people anyways.

And even though the Music was Very good, That ONE single complete silence part was what gave me goose bumps. It's been a while since it happened to me but that shit got my soul out of my body and back. I gripped my seat with my fingers and laid my head back and .....VOILA !!! Gooooood daaaaaamn son !!! WHOA !

Oppenheimer had little to do with the latest. The story line is force fed into your throat so again, nothing to leave to interpretation like Duchamp's work BUT the idea behind it all leave a mist of Japanese blood floating in your perverted mind for days and days after and I believe that's where rest the undeniable grandiose part of that movie.

I went with a friend and we were both divided about what we saw but both equally confused.

it was definitely a Roller Coaster ride...and a great one at it. But if you're able to go remotely deeper then the actual movie and fact presented to you in the movie, it will stay with you for at least a few days like Koyaanisqati did back then.

But just like Koyaanisqati, I don't believe it will have the same impact if I watch it on a shitty device then if I watch it again in my studio on my mastering monitors ....alone....in the dark...with the sound cranked up high enough so I can shit my pants once again.

i really loved all the glides on the strings

 

so, we did watch the movie, despite being 3-hour long piece it was not sleepy at all,
Nolan did not fail to make a movie that makes you think, even hours after movie ends, but that does not contradict the fact it's not one of those movies you'd enjoy watching multiple times,
and sadly although the music does fit the movie, it only stands out within the movie (pun intended, in context of terrible movie mixdown dynamics), nothing special to consider as standalone musical piece, the more you listen the more it becomes drony-stringy mess

 

Here is my favourite- Wait for the piano around 0:30.
