Good day everyone. Are there any ATH M40X owners here? I would really like to hear your feedback on these headphones (especially feedback on mixing with them). Thank you.

As an owner of ATH-M40X I can’t suggest them not only for mixing tasks but for casual listening as well.

You should remember that these headphones translate too much bass frequencies so consider these cans as dark. Also they boost sibilance frequencies and it’s very annoying. In addition, during the session ears become too warm and wet.

It’s a truly personal and unprofessional opinion since I’m a bedroom producer. I’d suggest You to book a session and try various studio headphones & decide for Yourself. Don’t buy without trying, please! I hope it was useful.

I also own the M40x and preferred them over the M50x. The 40s are flatter by default, the 50s are a little too harsh in the higher frequency area. I always use SoundID Reference with a flat profile and it's working very well, especially for lower frequency work. The correction didn't change my preference, for me the 40s are the better choice. Many people who are into mixing and studio work agreed to this.
Do not underrate calibration software, that really makes a huge difference. You should use that as well and get used to the cans to achieve great mixing results.

Hello everyone! Had the same issue a few years ago. I looked for several videos on YouTube until I found this channel (SonicSenceProAudio) that tests and compares professional audio equipment. This particular link refers to the ATH-M series and made me choose it over the others.

Regarding my ATH-M40x, I like them. Would buy again. The plastic material that covers the sponges disintegrated after a few months (to this day I don't understand why, as it was rarely used. Maybe because it was stored again in the box for almost a year - covid-19 pandemic). See also the comparison of it against the sony Sony MDR7506 and Sennheiser HD280 here:

cant speak to the m40x's as i don't have a pair, but i adore their bigger brother the m50x's. Fantastic headphones and can be made even better with software like ToneBoosters' MorphIT to get a perfectly flat frequency response. You won't be disappointed, Audio Technica products tend to be really great.

My best headphone investment for mixing is DT770 250 ohm.
Supported by most speakers simulators too.

Very defined in the upper mids (critical) and acceptable bass level.

It is not "high end", but very balanced.

A friend of mine have the X40, I really dont advice to use for serious mixing.
They are very far to be flat. Too much mediums, and bad low end definition.

Used to use the x40s for years but ended up switching to Sennheiser 6XX's and never looked back. (Currently still using the latter)

Sennheiser 6XX serie and Beyer Dynamic DT770 DT990 are well known mixing solutions.
Whereas on other brands/models, you make a gamble.

And on those cans, there are countless mods/tricks/support on speaker simulators.

I have the m40x. It measures better then the m50x and I'd recommend it generally, for listing and producing but not so much for mixing. The DT990 Pro is much better for that.

I used these for a while. I'd say they are the best of the M series, but less comfortable to wear than something like the Sony MDR-7506's.
Decent build quality. I wouldn't want to mix with them though.

Whatever headphone you're using, the point is to know your headphones well. e.g.the m50x has a 6db boost at 10khz.
