Well, I've been producing for a while now and I just can't get used to headphones (I have a DT 770 now) I just can't mix well with them, so I've been mixing for 3 years with a pair of DIY studio monitors, inspired on the KRK 10-3 g3, but now I feel like I should update them.

I've been living from music for a while now, and since the monitors are what I really rely on to guarantee the quality of what I'm producing I started to think that I should change them to a more serious alternative, they doesn't sound bad, it's just a technical question that have been popping in my mind lately so I thought about upgrading for something that I could keep for at least 5 years.

I found the KRK Rokit 8 G4 attractive, since the DIY monitors that I have been using are 10" and the krk's are 8", that's closest to what I'm used to work with... But I may be investing on something bigger that wouldnt necessarily give me more quality? Idk, I need you help, please guide me guysssss

Note: I live in Brazil so that's why I decided to go with a DIY alternative, music gear here are mostly really pricy and many industry standard gear can't be found here

Note2: I produce mainly hip-hop, idk if this influences the purchase decision but I'm giving this information anyway

Rokits are crap, get at least one of the old VXT models, those were really serious monitoring speakers, if you're really willing to get something from KRK. I think you should get something like the Yamaha HS8 o something like that, serious stuff. Just seeing that yellowish woofer from rokits already gives me goosebumps... oh boy those things are bad... frequencywise for me sounds just like a JBL soundbar that is made for you to listen to loud music and get drunk or something.

    this may help

Hard to say if it would be an improvement over DIY because well, it's DIY, not a lot any of us can do to tell how it sounds compared to legit KRK's. the lack of a mid freq driver on the rokit 8's might be an issue though.

I'd suggest a couple of things. First ask yourself, is there any problem in particular with what you have? Are you sure changing monitors is going to solve the problem (instead of acoustics, listening and monitor positioning, soundproofing, etc.)?

Second, see what's available in your country according to your budget and list it here.

So, I don't see any problems with my gear at all, I'm just not sure if the quality of my gear is good enough... I tested some krk, they sound really close to my speakers but I only did with the rokit 5, and even so my personal opinion doesn't seem to be a factor to judge if its good enough or not, so I really don't know where to go from this point

I think this should be first. No point in finding the perfect pair of speakers to purchase if you can't get them without crazy shipping prices or worse, not at all. Or even thinking about adding a sub without knowing you can't have one in the building you live or work in.

I was also going to mention the Yamahas or JBLs. They are a frequent upgrade for people using KRKs.

I'd say Yamahas then, HS7 or 8 if possible. JBLs are very nice (better than HS's imo) but they are kind of beefy sounding, not sure you'd want that if you do mostly hip hop. Yamahas are a more hollow sounding but they have more detail on vocals and other mid rangey things, they are also more aesthetically recognizable i guess. Of course, none of those are "neutral" so it may take a while to get good results out of them.

Also, try giving the acoustics some love too if you haven't already, and messing with the speaker/listening position because that can make a huge improvement and it's free.

they are not crap at all
you may not like them, there are better ones
if you learn your speakers, you can make great sounding music!

bessides, i think the hs5 and rockit 5 sound like shit
but the hs7 & rockit6 and up sound like a lot of fun

and yes bass traps and early reflections are a must
but bass is always a problem

I've had a pair of older Rokit 5s for several years now and I regret my decision to buy them. That's really my point here - unless you have the funds whatever you buy will probably have to last some time, so I would say don't buy anything that have questionable reviews. In reviews out of five, I wouldn't consider 3 good enough, 4 would be suspicious and 5 will be in the ball park because then it comes down to personal requirements as well as the sound. I would also be inclined to go with the majority opinion as well.

I'm thinking out loud here because I would like to replace my own monitors one day.

Think G4's are improved, more balanced, don't know prices in Brazil, but in that price range you can't go wrong with them or something like Kali Audio LP-8, Mackie MR-824, Fluid Audio FX8/80, Presonus Eris E8 and etc, all very good speakers.

Thanks for the reply guys, I’m not picking anything smaller than 8” unless there’s a good reason to, I don’t plan to get anything cheap, I’m really willing to spend the necessary amount to assure that the sound quality I’m having is good enough, I’m about to change my room next year so I didn’t invested much on acoustic treatment at all since I’ll probably change all the arrangement of my things, and even the room itself… I heard that krk is worse than both Yamaha and JBL, but I also heard that Yamaha is exhausting to listen for long periods of time… like their speakers sound bad in purpose. I also heard that the G4 generation of krk is way better than anything they ever did and some people say it’s better than Yamaha so I’m still willing to chose the ROKIT 8 g4

Also, would a subwoofer really matter at this size of speakers? Like 8" is pretty big for a close range already right?

you will not need one. my comment was just about options you might not have, due to where you live.
