I think soft clippers are generally in their own category of saturation plugins. I think many use them simply to limit and not much else, at least that's what I do. On the other hand, I think more tube-style saturation is better for making a signal sound "thicker" or "busy".

 

Anyone compared it to ash?

 

Leo can still mock me of course, but I THINK after working on a song I got it decently loud and clear- I never "complete" a song from start to master but this is probably the closest ive come as of yet. Im gonna go post it to see if I can get any feedback, but yeah pretty much since I posted that I've been dwelling on it haha.

 

still in the topic of clipping, spotify algo played this song randomly today, and I honestly thought my speaker was broken, was panic for a sec then after awhile I thought this sounds like clipping and turns out it was the entire duration of the song on both youtube and spotify. Do any of you find this "creative" decision is a good one, does it even sound pleasing to your ears ? It's not at all for me. try listen till the end, it's getting worse at some of the loudest part. If you are Spotify free user, even better, you'll get the full experience of it on 256kbps stream.

Is this what the new music has come to ? and that should explain why developers been releasing new clipping plugin everyday.

no Spotify here. it seems to me like a attempt at a low-fi vibe. i'm not sure I would blame this on use of clipper plugins; but more ones like XLN RC-20, Lifeline Expanse, Rift, etc. I didn't listen to it "Critically", but I get this feeling from the overall much cleaner bass. It isn't across the entire track anyway. Even with that in mind, the mix could be much better. Either way, it's not for me. Maybe it is something to do with the tv show it seems to be associated with? idk.

 

This is not an uncommon sound for the genre, I expected much worse from your description. This "full" sound is very much favored these days, it works well with modern Club PAs and car speakers. I can't say I'm a fan, I like it a bit less "thick" (my taste is more along the lines of late 1960s to mid 1970s records, sometimes I enjoy the 1980s (Electro) Funk sound too, but nothing that attempts to hit -8 LUFS or even denser. I believe that a master at -12 LUFS loudness is totally fine, no need to go denser.

 

Plenty of songs out there like this. It's the cycle of life, the stuff that the kids find to be cool is the stuff that breaks the rules. Gotta just accept it otherwise you're at risk of sounding like an old man yelling at clouds.

In 5-10 yrs there will be something else that breaks the rules. Maybe phasey masters that are out of corellation will be cool. Lol

Have you heard the genre "hyperpop"? It's even more distorted than this.

oh sweet stevie, sweet sweet stevie... that's not even the tip of the iceberg, people have experimenting and playing with high levels of distortion in the mix/mastering process since the 90s. Here's some recent examples:


regarding clipping, it's also not something new, people have been clipping since tubes, resistors and converters were invented. Today it's mostly an aesthetic choice.

I found out some interesting things about this one
1. on SC it has +4.4TP. Something I've never seen before and I'm asking myself if this is an intentional attempt to clip the DA converters?
2. Normalized to -1TP it has -7.6LUFSi and doesn't look limited/clipped professionally.
3. Since it had all these useless little spikes I applied a bit of limiting and...

So, if I get it right, "Gold processing" is some kind of an, um, upwards soft clipper? What is the effective difference between this and a usual clipper with some drive? It seems that it's gonna add harmonics all the same because there's no attack or release, just a transfer curve.

 

Was just looking at this 30 day free trial and 10% off with a payment plan FYI if anyone wants to compare it to ash. I can say it actually runs decently unlike ash ultra
