Every now and again, I write the odd acoustic demo track but I can't sing. I think my voi e sounds a bit flat and lifeless whenever I do try to sing, and maybe a bit of tone deafness in there too

Anyway, I'd love to be able to learn to sing so I could complete the demo tracks and songwriting process. The types of music I write similar to ranges from styles of people like Noel Gallagher (formerly of Oasis) and Damien Rice, so definitely more in the indie and folk kind of area.

I really do like Noel Gallagher's singing styles though, as he seems to have an airy (nasal?) quality while also sound calm, controlled, with good diction making his voice sounds like it's not straining and the lyrics are easy to hear. I'd love to be able to learn to sing in this style, but accept I'm not gonna go from absolute turd to one of the most famous songwriters of my generation over night

Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations for good, easy, and ideally quick methods to learn to sing and be able to hold a tune?

 

If there is one instrument when you really need a teacher it's voice.
To sing involves so many parts of your body, that you need someone to watch you and correct you.
Someone who will tell you where to get the energy from and how to use it to have a stronger voice.
Then, there are the "expression artifices" that you have to develop.
But first is the strength.

Imo, as Olymoon said this is one of those times you probably really should work with a coach, in person. And you'll find out pretty quick how much potential you really have...

I hate my voice, and I never have got good feedback on it. Then on a recent solo project I decided fuck it, I don' want to involve anyone else, I'll give it a go. And I found I could do that David Bowie impersonating Anthony Newley voice and it was so funny to me I just did it. And I've played it for a few people expecting to get brutalized for doing a lame Bowie impression and I've got the best feedback on my singing I've ever had. You just never know.

 

I believe that the voice is one of the most difficult instruments that exists, as it involves your body and many things influence the voice, such as your mood, anxiety, and more. There are many aspects involved in singing, especially intonation. Then you can incorporate singing techniques, but you may find contradictions in "the techniques." I have been to teachers who told me to focus on breathing, while others said that breathing is natural and one shouldn't be thinking, "Oh, I have to bring the air here and then push it with the diaphragm." Then you can explore how to play with your voice, and the best is the mixed voice according to the style you mentioned, which combines chest voice and head voice. That means you play with both depending on the notes in your range, and then you can play with intensity. I could explain more things, but I recommend something that clarified many ideas for me when I was confused years ago about head voice and falsetto (among other things). I tried Ken Tamplin's "how to sing better than anyone else" vol. 1 and didn't really like it. Like others said, it's the kind of thing you need your own teacher for.
I think one on one Ken would be good but you miss a lot on your own.

Though I will say his suggestion to do situps while practicing scales is brilliant and has helped me a lot.

I really liked Hannah Boulton's course Learn To Sing. It's thorough without getting bogged down and she's a great teacher.

 

Keep recording your voice, no matter how bad it sounds to you. We're rapidly approaching a time when we'll have AI plugins to create better vocals from terrible performances. Also, try Melodyne.

 

i found making sure you're belting it, like being louder than talking then it sounds way better than quieter with regards to tone, pitch, etc
obv get a coach if you can, i don't want to myself so i get by with practice and autotune/melodyne
