It's not that tape saturation is unpleasant. I think there isn't even a standard definition of "tape saturation" since every developer seems to have it's own interpretation :dunno:

Actual tape saturation (real world reel-to-reel machines overdriven) does actually produce mostly odd order harmonics as far as I understand, yet you have some "tape saturation" plugins producing even-order harmonics only, which is actually more of a tube-type of saturation thingy.

I found that I like the odd-order harmonics more and I usually use free GSat+ by TBProAudio plugin to achieve this. I also sometimes use tape plugins (Magnetite, Chow Tape) if I want to dial in a more wobbly-vibrato type modulated sound, but that's a choice. If you are not into the whole wow & flutter thing, then it wouldn't be surprising that you dislike tape plugins.

    Brilliant!
Facts. At this point when I see in the cousin site a new plugin with "saturation" I forget if it's tape/tube and keep reading the next.
Damn, they could make a whole new section: Software->Yet Another Freakin Saturation Plugin Bastard

Modern reel-to-reel machines are a lot less "musical" on the saturation side ... too "hifi"
Larger tape, faster speed ... mastering level

Old tracking ones (Motown era) are better on this side : smaller tape, slower speed
A kind of "better cassette" spirit

So taking a modern reel to reel tape mastering grade reference for "musical saturation" is a pure nonsense.
Like clipping mastering grade converters :rofl:

I never got a better saturation result in real life than pushing cassettes
I remember a CD album from a friend who pushed it into cassette : it sounded like a "remaster" version

You should check out the Lavry Gold AD converters behaviour when clipped or check out what soft saturation is.

Here's a quick explanation if interested:

    LOL
    I mix for decades now.
I already know what is "soft clipping", what tape saturation is (from old Motown 1 inch to "modern" mastering ones) or what a mastering grade AD DA converter is.

So called "AD soft clipping" is done by A SEPARATE SATURATION circuit.
Nothing related to "clipping" in Lavry Gold.

Because ppl compare apples to oranges doesn't mean I DO

I totally forgot about this plugin and yt suggested to me today because I might have made clipper related search few days ago. I figured the "test tone" function is really handy. I just leave it here.

Thanks for that. That's even more useful as I could shape the sound of my clipping per frequency and time domain. I was not aware of that plugin.

I've been a mixer for minutes now, so let me know if I got kinda the broad theory of some of this right, like how you would use clipping in each step to achieve nirvana, or even better soundgarden.

have individual elements going into subgroups going into the mix bus. or the tubas as us pros call it. get everything 100% arranged. finalize your applied effects and get everything solid. now take each audio stem and with the clipper shave a db or two or whatever is your taste off. adjust the levels of the song to account for extra head room and turn up with limiter. ?

... I just want to Leo to stop mocking me everytime I'm on the first page of that chain.

I just always wind up feeling I'm hearing a distortion that I don't like. It's not warm, ir fat, it just feels less hi-fi somehow than when I started that's (usually) not what I want.

Been playing with the Gold Clip demo. It's nice, it's very crunchy. Kind of a specialty "crunchy punch" sound in that way. For the tasty crunch you get, you do sacrifice some clearness / clarity, but i guess that's to be expected. I need to get more reps using it at subtle settings though, maybe there's more to it.

It's not light on CPU, it uses more than God Particle, SplitEQ, Weiss DeEss, and Kelvin on "high" setting, so it's hard to use it in a mixing context unless you're printing the audio or you've got an awesome CPU

This plugin wouldn't end up on this kind of comparison for me. Maybe you have a "bad version" installed? I mean, it isn't the lightest plugin certainly; but its also not like others with high oversampling rates enabled, either. But I also think it's price is more realistic than 200 bucks for this clipper. Standard Clip is already good enough for me, and I use it infrequently enough that I can safely say i will definitely not be buying this one for 200.

This plugin demands recent cpus. If you have an older machine it will not work.

I'm not sure if I even knew about it. For 28 bucks it's pretty affordable and comes with various clipping modes. :like:

I don't follow... Are you saying that Gold Clip shouldn't use more resources than God Particle? Or are you saying that God Particle shouldn't use as much CPU as Gold Clip?

Either way, i'm just going off what Studio One tells me. In a project i tested it in Gold Clip was hovering around 14-16% CPU, and God Particle + SplitEQ + Weiss DeEss + Kelvin were all hovering around 11-13%. Make of that what you will.
I'm using a i7-8700 CPU btw, getting a bit long in the tooth now. On Windows

The saturation plugin market is getting pretty... saturated.

Do you offer other sexual services?
$200 is quite cheap for something like that.
PM me your bank account number and where can we meet.

So is mine. I just mentioned it because you can sometimes see an oversized cpu consumption from one released version to the next. I have some plugins that use a lot more resources than it, so it surprised me to see. I uninstalled Kelvin almost immediately because of this.
