A dynamic range compressor does just that, quite like @clone just said. Don't mistake it from classic analog compressors emulations which modify more the signal

Sure, I'm always learning from you man. It's actually a very simple concept. Dynamic Range Compression just equalizes the loudness. The words are so misleading in this case. It reduces the loudness range, almost always raising the low-medium loudness moments (upwards in @clone's words)

And in almost every PC sound card and TV there's this feature. In a TV it may be called "night mode volume" or shit like that:

I'm so going to read more about this stuff tomorrow. I don't understand the equalization part of it. If what happened on parallel is compression, that's just parallel compression then which also reduce the dynamic range in a way with added loudness. Confused drunk now.

 

This 'gain smoothing' is exactly how a GR curve of a compressor looks like. In this case the ratio would be ~ 7:1.

 

It been done and is being done to an even worse degree THESE DAYS in the fact that every single kiddie bedroom producer out there with 1/2 a DAW as well as major record label "professionals" are all using the same digital "tools" to "master" their recordings to be louder than the next monkeys'. The end result is a pile of clipped off at 0 VU (or whatever target threshold) garbage that in a majority of cases more closely resembles noise rather than music... Personally, am not a fan of tracks that are 100% up in your face, distorted sounding, with all the dynamic range of a pile driver.

Ok, the words here are very misleading. We all here understand equalization as modifying frequencies but that's no intuitive at all. To equalize is to make something more even or the same. If a football game is 1-0 and they score the 1-1 they have equalized the score.

And the same happens with compression. We all think of analog-modeled compression plugins, or others that add more or less saturation, harmonics...
In music production terminology dynamic-range-compression (or loudness-equalization) is closer to to a very soft limiter/clipper or in general the tools used in the loudness wars.

 

The only thing I use on my 2track now is The God Particle. I gave up iZotope's Ozone with all of its resource hounding for just one plugin.
And if you increase the level on the big knob it'll increase the level not the peaks.
