if it used artistic - it can add to a sound/song pretty much.
With artistic i mean, not to enhance a vocal, but be more as Effect in the background - increase the creativity of the song in general.
I agree on vocals it just sounds silly and generic to overdone - Looking at you Trap Music ...

Hmm if you made it into one of the top20 pop playlists on spotify, which the young generation seems to play, its a big win for you.
And additional if you really sound different in a good way compared to all the crap the major labels pushing out, then its a double win.

What generally concerns me is how younger people consume music. its more like hey let me spotify something - they start with no aim, they simply play with they get suggested instead of making up their own mind about what they want ...
Maybe i am old fashioned in this concern?

If you listen to the video above where she plays the piano, you will see that she has tremendous control of her voice. A little research tells me that she has received operatic training, specifically bel canto. I'm not sure how much fx was used in the studio, but some of the sound is coming from her own natural singing technique.

commercial singers that we don't like can change of way and become more pleasant without the artifices.
without the need of tons of fx on vocals as autotune.

maybe you will also like this one... it's a frenchie ex commercial pop singer that was doing shit. now it is quite better, but underscored.
due to a image fashion factor and media investisment for clips.

Young people need a mentor. When my nephew was growing up I filled his iPod with a wide range of music from various decades. Now he has much better taste than I do, and is always recommending new stuff for me to listen to!

This was different for me. I decide from one day to another i want to stop listening to pop music and instead went for dance music, trance, jungle, drum and bass, ambient, etc all those obscure Electronic genres. I guess music channels helped there alot.

But i also appreciate soundtracks, film scores, 80s music, new age, neo classic stuff. there is a wide range of music i like.

I never had a mentor or something it just grow for me without anybody and i pretty never wanted to listen to the stuff my friends listened too. I hated it ...

I think you are right some youngsters could need a music mentor to avoid the bad pop music, which is released today. there is plenty of that in the mainstream, which just lets you cry if you listen to it ...

It would be cool to know how metacritic ranks some of the mainstream pop albums of this year? Just to have a comparision how good the 1st place of her is.

They take all the professional reviews and average the score. Same thing with the listeners, but that is a separate score, so you end up with two different results. If both are high it's probably worth a listen.

    Here is the current example.

lots of processing, but it's not a crutch and instead like using reverb rather than recording in a chamber, a creative choice :P

I like her music a lot. Her previous album PANG is also pretty solid. In the world of commercial pop music, she definitely sets herself apart from other names with her diverse songwriting, pretty solid voice, good lyrics etc.

Her previous work under the monikers Ramona Lisa and CEP are also really good.

As Ramona Lisa she released some kind of lo-fi indie pop music that can sound like a nice blend of Kate Bush and Boards of Canada.

As CEP she released a minimalist ambient drone album using nothing but sine waves -I kid you not. I can't imagine Lady Gaga or Katy Perry doing anything remotely similar to this.

I'm glad I discovered her music.
