...been using reason ever since version 2. In that time the propheads have gone from one lame auth scheme to the next - each one alienating more users in the wake of every new release. I can count at least four from memory...This is just another cog in the chain... Reason has become so bloated from what it used to be - which was a very solid platform for scratch-padding new ideas and a source for new sounds. These days the proliferation of new one off synths, DAW's, plugins and sound generators has almost made the iconic giant passé in the general sense. I still have reason on tap for those occasions where I just want to play around with rhythms and ideas in a sandbox and see what comes out. Not sure the higher prices really justifies it anymore.

There is nothing bad in this link, I clicked it. It's just an advert from Propellerhead, hence the "shady" aspect.

If what I read elsewhere is true, legit users from prior versions will not be able to use it off line any more
More and more developers are penalizing their legit users to protect their benefits.

Another software which even legit users (if any) will use the cracked version...

Edit: this is what Propellerhead explains about the consequences:

    Blog article
t’s not every day you get to deliver news that’s really good, but that’s also a bit tough to deliver.

Today we are announcing that we are closing the old authorization solution for offline usage of Reason 11 and earlier. Reason 12 has been worked on since 2020 and is still being worked on with 12.6 being released just a few weeks ago – making it the biggest change to the Reason codebase for a very long time. It has made Reason future-proof and easier for our dev team to add new features to. Since Reason 12 is such a big change to Reason it has also meant that the new authorisation solution can only work with Reason 12.

We know that focusing on Reason 12 and onwards and closing a 15-year authorization solution that has caused so much headache both for us and for the community is the right choice – but it’s also a tough one, because those of you not yet on Reason 12 will have to rely on online authorization only.

I won’t go into all the tech details of what this means, but if you want to dig deeper there’s a page here that goes into a bit more detail. The gist of it is that if you rely on Reason for your music, our strong recommendation is for you to be on Reason 12 absolutely latest from September. That’s why we also have a campaign launching today to give everyone the possibility to get on the Reason 12 train.

With Reason 12.6, Reason is in the best state it has been in for many years. With our dev team now no longer having to support old software, we can look forward and continue building on the music making capabilities of Reason. I hope you are as excited about that as me.

Heading from link in the article states :
    ADIEU, OLD AUTHORIZATION SYSTEM
Upgrade At 60% Off And Say Bye To The Old Authorization System

Hope this clarifies what is happening.

Hhaah Reason folks trying to cashing in on R2R users - nice try. Hope R2R can take a look at it - i know it will be a lot of work again. Or maybe just release last .5.x update and call it a day.

For .5.x version is enough, i am only using the PLugin version with all the classic things from Rearon 5. No need for the newer RE stuff for me.

    "Why are we doing this?
The technology has simply passed its due date. In order for us to make better products, we need to remove any reliance on legacy components that might otherwise hold us back."

Translation: those people at R2R have demolished our protection. If you want to keep on using Reason, you'd better get with the program. You run our software, we OWN your computer. We'd better be able to see what else you're running on there -- in real time -- or we're cutting you off.

I used to really like Propellerheads. It was Rebirth that first got me interested in making music, and the first copy of Reason was my first DAW. I stuck with it until 5.x, but by the time they were able to lock us out, I found that I was using Ableton far more than Reason. It was just so much more flexible.

And Reason's tech was always a bit baffling to me. What the hell was a CV? There aren't any voltages anywhere here. It's all just midi and audio, so what the hell is this CV shit all about. It really wasn't until VCV came out that I finally got my head around Control Voltages, what they did and why they did it.

So when R2R finally cracked it, I downloaded 11.x and played with it a bit. I quite liked some of the toys, but not enough to use it as my dominant DAW. And it was much too unwieldy to use as a VST. So it's really just sat there, taking up space. I did install it on my new Windows 10 installation, but I think I'll probably delete it. I use it so infrequently that I forget the various short cuts, and everything seems unnecessarily unwieldy.

Perhaps I'll take ArticStorm's advice. 5x really does contain everything that I need in Reason. I could keep a copy of that lying around, 'just in case'. (I won't throw out 12 though. Too anal and obsessive when it comes to hoarding warez. Nothing worse than needing it and not having it.0

The Propheads are NOTORIOUS for these kinds of antics. It really doesn't matter much at this point anyway. The Reason ver I have running now is well into the 64bit release schedule so no need or want for me to upgrade or change out the current working version. The propheads are also notorious for taking their sweet time getting major release changes implemented (like moving from 32 to 64bit and the addition of VST capability) and working solidly. All the while blaming the end user for issues caused by their own inadequate coding and quality control methods. The reason "packs" were a novelty in their day, but these days they are no where near the quality of an Omnisphere, or Superior drummer, etc, etc... Reason was never anything but a giant sound generator for me. As a "DAW" it is lacking in more than a few areas, hence the need to be able to "re-wire" stuff into a real DAW.

The idea to simply run a version 5 is a very attractive one. It's just laying around here somewhere. It's much more streamlined and less bloated. The only issue I would have is the fact that isn't ver. 5.x all 32bit?? If I remember it was capable of running on a 64 bit system, but code wise it was 32bit...If I remember correctly reason didn't go full on 64bit until around version 8.xx?? I would be wondering how it would work and play in full-on modern 64 bit sandbox...

Ok, I was suspicious and even reported the link and I apologize for that, in my defense it's the third weird link I've seen here in the last month (last two were actual scams) so I'm a bit paranoid, hope you guys can understand that. I'm sorry. Hope you all have a nice weekend.
