    Lately I only use presets.

I level my instruments, type the dbfs on klanghelm vu meter, pick a preset adjust level back to dbfs and move on

my mixes have become louder, clearer and wider

bass - massive rock bass preset
clap - softube trident snare presset
Snare - Ssl native drums tight snare preset
hi hat cymbals open hat - Drums Heavy HP Cymbals
kick is weird you have to brows thorough a lot of presets

other instruments like synths guitars piano etc massive has the best presets

    has anyone experimented like this?

Yeah, me too, a long time ago. I also stopped using my eyes.

These days I only use my ears, which are quite handy for mixing.

(not even) Sorry to be that guy, but that only means you never started using your brain for mixing to begin with, as you didn't (and still don't) know what you were doing.
But I guess at least half-engagion your ears in the mixing process is an improvement. Ideally tho you should engage both to the fullest - and you can't engage one without the other. There's no lazy out.

I think presets are a good starting point but if you adjust them to your mix then it will be much better.
Once you start mixing different styles you will quickly realize that only using presets is not a solution.
There is a reason why top mixing engineers rarely use presets. In a lot of cases instruments need different EQ for the optimal results.

On the other side it's probably okay if you are completely new so you can get an "good" sound without much work but it won't sound professional.
I would recommend you to use those presets and experiment with their faders.
This will help you to get an better understanding of what makes your mix sound good
