Load more VSTs : Effectively removing the FLS Slot allocation limit in Windows 10

Not all limitations are great for creativity
Back in Windows 10 1903, we increased the number of FLS (Fiber Local Storage) slots for Windows 10 applications.
This effectively removed a limit on the number of plugins a DAW could load.

In computer science, everything that takes space or other resources has limits, either explicit or practical. In the case of FLS Slots in Windows (going back to at least XP), that explicit limit was 128 per-process. That means, each application could have, at most, 128 FLS slots allocated. Once a fiber in that application tried to allocate a 129th slot, an error would be returned. This is a limit that almost no Windows applications ever get near to hitting. Well, that is, no applications except for applications that load dozens or hundreds of DLLs they have no development control over.

With planned annual updates to Windows 10 until 2025, it is still the viable choice for creators & enterprise.
If Windows 11 ever gets stabilized it may, be a viable option or, just a stable version like Windows 8.1 became.

As stated by myself & others over the years, Microsoft, needs to start from scratch with new code for a much improved OS outcome.
Apple took heat for retooling macOS but, this proved to be the correct move in the end.

Right now Windows is a messy patchwork of Unix, DOS & Linux.

    Windows paradox:

If it is stable, a new Windows version will be released and support will expire. So the operating system never becomes stable.
I read an article that if you are making music on your PC, you shouldn't be connected to the internet.
Only the DAW on the hard drive then you would have a stable system.

the updates will never stop windows or mac.. and maybe 64 bits plugins someday will stop working in 20 years because something "NEW". ..
rosseta 2.. what will happen when Apple M1 will let behind "Rosseta 2".. ? all those plugins who didn't jump to the train will vanish... same as windows .. it will happen ,, the OS updates will never end.. that's software .. mac or windows.. it should More... 2 only for the Whole world it is not fair.. 2 only.. linux.. maybe.. too complicated.. but more stable than windows. so.. not a lot of options .

As a last resort, you will either stop the forced updates or have a computer offline forever just for music.

    Please tick the correct answer:

    A.) Deactivate updates
    B.) Offline Music Computer

    Stable is stable...New is new.

Being connected or disconnected is a matter of software configuration & optimization. Especially on Windows OS which by default, is always trying to connect to Microsoft (Telemetry).

A computer configured for off-line operation will of course be superior in operation while still being able to be manually updated using
the Microsoft Update Catalog. For just security, the Security intelligence updates. My current mode of Windows 10 20H1 operation.
Waiting to see how stable 20H2 is compared to the pre-release version.

The standard Win11 is perfectly adequate for mixing if that's what you have, as is the standard Win10.

This is an offshoot of gear acquisition syndrome. There is no 'perfect' system, just use what you have until you can afford something better. Even a lower-end laptop is still more powerful than the systems available for all the classic 60s/70s/80s/90s records. Your mixing skills are more important than an extra 100mHz on your CPU or an extra stick of RAM.

I'm now using Win 10 Enterprise LTSC - "IoT" version. I still prefer 7 but this is as lean and stable as 10 gets, as standard. Supported until at least 2029. Half the bloat is already gone (compared to commercial/pro), fewer updates except the important ones. I block updates entirely anyway, but if a program I wanted to use required a new update level, I could turn updates on, install and then off again.

Whatever provides the features you need with the best stability. Sometimes you have to compromise the other.

I personally do W11 with basic debloat, I can't be arsed spending my time tweaking shit instead of getting things done. Work is for that :)

    *edit:* Bad grammer
