He recently tweeted that his phone has 4 decks and this is his new set up.

is it just me or is it getting ridiculous?

If it work for him, why not?

We had the same debate every time the technology changed.

 

If people pay him for it, I am certain he doesn't care about the rest.

It's human nature.

The first kings started out as warlords who rained death on those that disagreed with them and kind of let live those who were under their influence and slowly they changed to job title to be the guys who go blow jobs instead of a gong for an alarm clock and bred their first cousins or sisters exclusively.

People are efficient (lazy) but if it works, it works. People are going to party and roll hard after an hour or so he could check out put a body double in place and less than dozen people would notice. Nobody is going to notice that he's making fake mixing motions in front of his phone now, instead of CDJ connected to a laptop...

 

I guess I'm not surprised. Deborah De Luca is a pioneer in not doing shit but flipping her hair around.

 

I don't like the idea of it but from a consumer perspective - who needs a photographer/cinematographer/dj with their $10k gear when the the person with their smart phone/tablet app can get you 80% the quality at 1/10 the price in just a few minutes uploaded straight to socials.

Within 3 years, I expect mobile phone app + uad card(or other mobile compatible sound cards) + sm58/7b to be the preferred setup amongst the young recording artist. Studio desk days are numbered.

One battle DJ said it great in one interview, that "it doesn't matter where the songs are coming from as long as there is time code vinyl setup, thank God the days of milk crates are over"

 

Why not just let him stream the entire thing from home? I guess because the atmosphere wouldn't be the same.

Didn't you read the new Attack Mag article about DJ'ing is no longer driven by the music you play but rather your image.

 

You need to understand his setup. It's not 'just' a phone. I was watching some recent Digital DJ Tips video on YouTube, where Laidback Luke is a guest tutor/presenter for them, and Phil Morse mentioned that Laidback Luke had recently done away with his Denon setup and now DJs on his phone with a Reloop Mixtour controller as the main mixer for it 'along with some other bits'.

So it's misleading to say he DJs just using his phone. He simply uses his phone instead of a laptop to run a DJ software and store his music. He still uses other controlling devices just like any laptop DJ would.

It makes perfect sense to me. It's technological advancement now that phones have enough computing power and that DJ companies have made decent DJ apps, and it aids DJs to do away with the bulky laptop screens that most have always hated to have in their booth.

Your in the crowd, you look at LBL - is he mixing his next track? posting on instagram? watching porn hub? catching up on last nights eastenders? scrolling through tik tok?

 

You been to a techno gig in the last 15 years or so? The "act" (and I've been guilty of these, don't get me wrong) looks like a guy checking his e-mail and chatting on IRC, and all of the action is in the live visuals.

 

And why are these thoughts any different if he is using a laptop?

And, wouldn't you be much less likely to see a tiny mobile phone on a stand in front of him than a big laptop?

This whinge makes no sense to me!

 

I understand where you're coming from and it certainly make sense but in the end it is just a tool.

Now, we can sit here and make a process of intention out of his new gadget but what really matter is people enjoying what he is doing and more importantly, him making a living out of it.

As far as I can tell from his live video show, he is still mastering the ''lets rotate some buttons'' move and the ''lets throw our hands in the air'' move which ultimately is all there is to all of their performances. Other then the music itself obviously.

I say let the guy scroll his instagram live on stage and people eat peanuts and go coocoo in the crowd. We'll all sleep tight at night anyways.

Dj'ing aside, I would hate a concert where the singer plugs in his phone aux and lip syncs to Spotify. I'm not paying for karaoke and air guitaring
