I just have to get this off my chest!

During the last few months I have looked a lot into Creative Commons, simply because I had to. I made a website for a friend, I'm about to make my own website. Also I make music with free samples from the web. And it's insane... It seems like the only user-friendly license is Creative Commons Zero, everything else is a pain in the ass! It's cool that people let me use their stuff commercially, but at some point thats not possible if I have to link their personal pages everywhere because they want to get mentioned. That just dont work... You can't make a website and write on half of it links and names to people. I don't even know what these people expect from me? Should I right big, fat and red in the middle of my page User XY from Site ABC made the picture you can't see because you only can read this bullshit! And when it comes to a Facebook-Button, it's just insane to link back to the site of the creator. Its just a button?!

Yeah I know it isnt that bad, but I wonder why thats necessary? When I contact these people they just say "Yes go ahead and use it commercially, I dont have a problem with it". Then why put up those crappy Copyright-Conditions?

And whats up with the Audio-Scene? Nearly everything on ccMixter is Non-Commercial. On Freesound it's not that bad, but then again you have to look into all these different versions of Attribution. Honestly, I dont see the point in mentioning that Mister 123 made the snare I layered with two others, thats stupid.

Why is it so hard to just share?

Feel free to use this thread as a possibility to hate on anything that has to do with Copyright... Or argument for CC or whatever. Let me know how you feel about all this different Copyrights, and how you feel about lawyers that use this mess to harm us.

And dont take it the wrong way, I understand why people want to get mentioned. But simply because Im from the other site I wouldnt do that if I would publish something under CC, because it makes everyhing more complex than it need to be.

 

Issues with copyright are almost like issues with privacy. Creators require more control because of fear. And copyright is so strictly enforced simply because there is not much quality content. Well that's my opinion

 

I don't know why, but this thread reminds me of Vengeance Sounds, these boys are able to give copyright to a fart.

Sometimes I think we exaggerate and abuse of copyright

 

damm if all your doing is using some buttons and shit dont even bother giving credit...you would need a separate page just for the credits.

If your using something substantial such as a full track/instrumental or a picture/photo then giving credit should be standard...

 

Thing is if they write down that they want credit, you technicly would do something 'illegal' if you dont give them credit. Its insane...

If you create a website you sometimes use a lot of pictures. You cant give credit for all, and I dont even see the point. They are like the clap and snare samples, or maybe a chopped instrument loop. They float all together, sometimes you wouldnt even recognize them. If its something like a finished/premade Logo you just put your text in, I agree with giving credit. But for some normal pictures?

The problem is this makes everything so complex. I think the people that commited to CC have the right spirit (mostly), but in fact they often make it harder.

 

Just write up a "blanket" copyright disclaimer;

"All text, images, audio and video presented on this website are subject to copyright. I attest that I have
sought and received permission to distribute the material on this website in respect of the original copyright holders. Someone Inc. © 2014"

Simple solution: don't use samples, use synths and drum machines instead.

Buy a camera, and shoot your own photos. If you do websites for a living, just buy royalty free pics, they're rather cheap.

Because there's always some scumbag who try to rip you off financially.

Image some Avicii or Hardwell dude takes a loop from you and makes millions, do you care or not?

She's a Berlin based Neonist (the ideology that that technology will make it inevitable the the young will seize power eventually), and critical of the idea of the CC because it does not involve the rights of consumers. Beautifully written. I'd love to read more of her stuff.
