Maybe start with a String Ensemble VST? Any of the Spitfire Libraries are good.

I don't know this kind of VST. Do you mean it had some string arrangements ready to use ? I already have a melody which is itself a countermelody for the main voice and I would like to be able to harmonize it for a string quartet.

Seriously? Ask chatgpt. Collaborate. Do you want to give your melody and get a full arrangement? Oh man!

Sure, I mean nothing is going to automatically generate a good string arrangement, it requires a human. And half of them will also not generate a good string arrangement, so find a decent string arranger would be my suggestion. The end result they can still do with vsts of course. I feel like I've done some pretty good stirring arrangements myself but then I'm biased. :winker:

Band In A Box. But don't expect anything to go viral... I whole heartedly encourage you take some pride & do the time to learn how to compose 4 part string arrangements. Snoop around on VI-Control, ask some questions. Read a few books. Watch a few tutorials. There's lots of goodies available on the sister site.

Just now, while sat in my "isolated contemplation booth" (i.e. the toilet), I had an idea for a story that i quickly wrote down on a recently used sheet of toilet paper.

So i can show all my friends & facebook fans what a genius film director i am, which VST plugin can I download (for free) that'll turn my authentically shitty notion into a state-of-the-art, award-winning, multi-million selling sci-fi blockbuster starring Elvis Presley, Ronald McDonald & a very confused Genghis Khan?...

No, no software exists that can "generate a string arrangement from a melody". But if you got a decent budget, I'm sure you can hire someone. :winker:

I would go so far as to suggest that the notion of creating a string arrangement from a melody is flawed. Generally, good string parts compliment a melody; they adorn and ornament it and they often don't follow it at all. Otherwise all you'll get is something like a 4 parallel part choral arrangement out of an old Baptist hymnal. That's all some auto-harmoniser program is going to get you.

Just do it yourself. It's called "composing", a forgotten art in making music in 2023.

Or: ask ChatGPT. If you give it the key of the song and the notes of the melody, it can actually suggest a chord progression for you.

I've never arranged strings, it's an interesting endeavour. I would use a string quartet and start with the lowest pitched instrument (Cello?) then add the next instruments upwards one by one. It probably wouldn't be great but it would be mine. I would also listen to a lot of Beatles arrangements and other pop songs that include a string section because they would usually hire a professional arranger.

I joined the topic starter, and what I see, things that have been proposed so far, shorter are kinda: " Man, 2x2 = 4, didn't you know that?"

Ok, a little from my experience: Sibelius notator knows all the ranges of strings (and others), but that's not enough,
NI Session Strings has an animator/arpegiator, that proposes several different presets and you choose wich one is good for your theme (I develop some cinematic orchetral theme now, and NI SS helped me a lot with strings),
Project Sam proposes several products with an animation for the orchestral instruments... maybe there are some other software with such features, that I didn't hear of it .
Next: Band in a box and several others propose arrangement for pop, jazz, rock songs...so what? We want a software that makes the same as BIAB, but for strings and/or orchestra...
any way that software should make a midi files, so you could edit them till you're satisfied with results. That's it.

You summed up exactly what I'm trying to do
I'm flabbergasted by some of the "do it yourself" comments. :woot:
Why do you even use VST instruments? Why don't you learn to play the violin, drums, guitar, piano, etc.? :guru:
I specify that I myself am a multi-instrumentalist. Thousands of years ago, the first human being who used something other than his voice or his body to make Music (a piece of wood, animal skin, stone, a tube and wind , ...) it was already technology and a help to develop creativity. ChatGPT or any computer tool is nothing but tools that facilitate creativity. Would you be afraid that a computer has more talent than you ? :)

Maybe you could try and engage something like EZKeys to come up with a midi pattern and work your way up to a string arrangement?

    Apologies for gasting your flabber.

The only instrument I've heard that does an excellent job in this regard is The Orchestra for Kontakt in the animated section but it might be too cinematic for your purposes.

I realise it won't generate anything from a melody but the chords in the song will basically do the same thing in this context.
