    Hello Board,

Philips' Golden Ears training program was designed to develop the listening skills of audio engineers. Now the essential elements of this professional program are available as an online challenge with four difficulty levels:

    >> Philips - Golden Ears <<

If you think you can spot sligh imperfections and colorizations in sound with your setup and your ears, take this challenge and make sure you were right. :)

    Br,
    Olaf

This is great practice for those really wanting to get into mixing and mastering..EQ really is the most important part of it and listening to how EQ changes the balance of things

Well, I just tried with the iPhone earbuds, and I got it OK until the Silver Ears quite easily but I can't pass it because I fail one test I can't hear any differences about the MP3 bitrate above 112kbps... I guess I'll need to continue the test tomorrow morning with better audio interface and real speakers ;)

    Thanks for the link!

We have to do the Golden Ears program at my school & it's not easy by any means. The teachers there all swear by the program though. One of them told me he does it every now and then still, just to touch up & practice. They say no matter how many you get wrong, just keep doing them & eventually it becomes second nature just like anything else.

I got a chance to sit in on a mixing session yesterday with one of my teachers & his ability to pinpoint exact frequencies was pretty damn impressive. He said it was definitely Golden Ears that helped him get to that skill level at such a young age. So, I think I'll be spending more alot time doing the program in the near future.

right now i just passed the mp3 aritfacts test ! it was quite difficult for me also and i tried a lot of times at 128kbps ! but it may be because i use poor headphones

im on gold right now ! and the timbre frequency bands on music is difficult for me but also its a good training !

Ouch, it was harder than I thought... finally got my "Golden Ears"!

The MP3 Bitrate test gave me a lot of hard time, even at home on my little home studio speakers (I should try again at the studio on the Focal Twin).
I also had some trouble with the Sub cut-off (but I know it, I can't hear anything below 70Hz at home, I should also try at the studio to see if it's more obvious).

I'm glad I did this test, because it also confirms me few things I knew about my ears, my speakers and my room at home. Very nice test that I will recommend to anyone around me.

Note: This test also confirms me another one I did on another forum few time ago (about Wav 16bits/44,1kHz vs. AAC 320 kbits).
I ever been convinced I could hear the different between the "poor" mp3/aac compression and the very nice wav file...

But actually I can't and a well properly coded 320 kbits MP3 or AAC files is just as good as a Wav files.
I already had some hard time with the 128 kbits here on this new test if it says so...

It's definitely a good training system!

    testin' mp3 with 256 mp3... is hard.

When you unlock all of this quite easy test... (except for MP3 A/Bing)...

At Golden ears stage 2, it goes in BERSERKER mode... 9 band boost/cut... You get only one chance... THIS IS FUCKIN' HARD.

Fuck this shit. Silver ears is enough.

Yep the 9 band boost/cut could be hard and you can easily get lost sometimes...

If you did lost your reference, you can still open a second window with the training course and redo the training during the test and not mess up your 1 chance to reply correctly. By having the references training course, it's way easier ;)

My first score on the 9-Band Boost/Cut Pink Noise I got all of em wrong. I was either 1 or 2 bands off but after being required to do 6 hours of it, I was able to get a perfect score but I tried this again two days ago & only got 1 right the first test. Lol. Guess it's not like ridin a bike. Haha. Need to make sure I keep givin myself touch-up tests.

I've only been browsing this forum for a short time, and I'm already excited about all the gems I've found here so far. This is probably one of my top favorite finds on here so far! I was actually having a really hard time feeling confident in my ear's abilities. I was actually quite worried that my untrained ear would have me using a bunch of sub-par samples, or churning out products that are EQ'd badly, and never knowing that I'm fucking up like that. I don't know if this site will do everything I ultimately want to with my ears, but it's sure as hell a good training program in its own regard. :) Thanks for sharing this Olaf!
