Hi. I'm trying to find a version of the Yamaha MU100 for kontakt. I've found SY-50, but this doesn't have the MU exclusive sounds, which are the ones I'm after. Anyone know if there are any other synths which had the same sounds which have been done for kontakt?

I have a load of old songs I want to re-master.

XG was all about effects, so that's why it was "He who rules the effects rules XG" (PDF Guidebook). Even if someone would sample all the sounds of an MU synth, the effects of XG would be missing and the MIDIs would not sound the same. Kontakt cannot even use all of the SysEx, so I don't believe even Yamaha themselves could create a 100% compatible library.

Most likely, you're best bet would be the S-YXG50 VSTi. It implements XG level 1, so it doesn't have all the sounds of an MU100 (XG level 2), but it covers the MU basic map. It's also the only VST XG synth Yamaha ever made.

 

Although as Olaf said which I agree with I just installed S-YXG50.dll VSTi (DB50XG) today and the S-YXG2006LE.dll VSTi (SW1000XG) and the MU100 MU90 and MU80 sounds do not work. I did sample the SW1000XG though for Kontakt (basically .nki with wav. samples folder) before I sold it but as Olaf said it won't be as good. If you want the Magnet link for the torrent just message me on here and you can just choose the sounds you want or can download the whole lot at a horrendously large 33.3GB instead of the 4mb VSTi plugin. I know not great but at least you might get some of the sounds you are after without downloading the whole torrent. With the 2 Plugins I used XG-Edit latest on sister site to change the sounds and installed loopMIDI for a virtual midi port.

S-YXG2006LE is not based on SW1000XG. It's from MidRadio 7 and sounds completely different. SW1000XG has the same engine and wavetable as the MU100.

From today's perspective, the sounds themselves of these synths are not that spectacular. In case of MU100/SW1000 it's a 20 MB ROM. The best patches from the MU modules evolved into Halion (Sonic). The key would be XG compatibility. But like I explained, Kontakt cannot do this.
