Just wondering if there's any significant development at all? I have a lot of tracks I need to clean up the tagging info on. I normally use mp3tag or Professional Tag Editor, but it can get laborious and zaps the will to live out of someone

Is there anything better out there or newer software developed that allows for the auto-tagging of tracks using the track's audio fingerprint to identify it or something similar?

Use mp3tag, use it often, catch the tags from Discogs, automate as much as possible. Use Album Art Downloader as external program to retrieve album art. There is no better software around, neither paid nor free. And ... mp3tag can tag everything. Important: learn about APE tags and when to use them and more importantly when not to use them. Develop your own scripts (it's not that hard). I manage with mp3tag and foobar my collection of nearly 400.000 files. Very important is to have strict clean rules regarding the nomenklatur and to stick to them. If you have it all set up - takes a while - it's a breeze. You will love your clean and tidy collection of files. :)

I agree that mp3tag is still the best.
I want to try PerfectTunes one day, from the same company than the amazing dbPowerAmp

Sounds perfect, but I've never been able to gey my head round things to get this kind of utopian solution

Yes it is. I think it's worth a try. or at least check out some reviews on the net. They specialize in automating tasks, but I don't really have references of PerfectTunes

mp3tag is still the best, but the only effective way is to immediately tag each file you get your hands on. I have got more than 16.000 files and all are tagged, one by one, by myself. Besides Artist and Title I always include Year and Genre (I use 12 categories and strictly stick to them). I do it in foobar2000. It requires previous neat file (re)naming.

I still use mp3tag but I have Perfect Tunes around somewhere, just never gave it a try or installed it yet.

Onetagger https://onetagger.github.io is new and not bad option, it has some quirks but some things it does best. I use kid3 mostl of the time, but if i need to pull data for tags/covers nowdays i use onetagger.
