    Good advice!
I'm a long time user of TC, but never thought of this possibility.

I use Toontracks EZ Player but wish that they would update it I kept asking ADSR to incorporate this feature in there sampler manager but it fell on def ears there really isn't anything out there as good as ez player come on toon tracks bring it back and update it PLEASE
Maybe we should all hit up toontracks and request they bring it back I do this every so often the more people that do it the better the chance because its a great piece of software

I use Reaper's Media Explorer and it works pretty good.
I set up my default template with dual purpose 1st channel as MIDI hardware output to MS GS wavetable Synth, and also as audio input for quick recording. It's great to have it within the DAW for easy drag-drop if desired, but a bit fiddly to manage the media explorer window width, so if I am really going to browse, i'll undock it. That also give room for the 'details' view columns, or to see more columns of files.
This setup has also allowed me to quickly delete around a hundred duplicate midi song files just as I browsed.

I tried using Total Commander once but had some hangup ... perhaps I didn't get the plugin set up or something.
I need to check it out again - thanks for the reminder.

Quicktime Player used to play midi files if I'm not mistaken.
Now I can play .mid with VLC just fine.
OP said he didn't want to drag and drop the files. Well, how would you play it without any mouse or keyboard interaction? hmmm...

    Edit:
Sorry, VLC only plays any .mid files with the same piano sound.

I love Studio One for that purpose. Its file manager is great and you can prelisten with one click on each midi file. If your files are well organized, you don't need another midi player. You can even prelisten the files when you load a vsti on a track if you don't want the same piano sound.
