Bumping this thread for more tips. Lots of good ones, I struggle myself to learn Reaper because I'm lost when I launch it. I'm used to FL Studio but I look at Reaper as an addtion to FL instead of a replacement of it. I'm amazed at some of the audio capabilities and just general vastness of custom features they provide you with.

 

This is an old topic, but anyway I wanted to thank you all for your support. It wasn't even my own topic. Anyway, I've decided to leave Pro Tools behind for the same reasons everybody knows. Too greedy, slow to adapt and get implemented, lack of widespread compatibility and so on.

I've started mixing in reaper, and I'm actually enjoying it.

Is reaper really better than Ableton?

 

Maybe try to approach that question differently and not to evaluate in "better" and "worse". Neither of the two DAWs is bad. They're different. Period.

• If you compose electronic music, especially based on loops, or perform live with electronic music, Ableton Live might be for you.
• If you value a small footprint, do complex sound design or mixing audio with many tracks, need maximum performance and/or want to save money, Cockos Reaper might be for you.

I can connect my USB stick pretty much anywhere, even to the oldest Windows XP computer, Mac or Linux and boot Reaper from USB. And after a few seconds I'm in. I can run any project at any sample rate, as high or low as I want. Not that it's something I do all the time. But the certainty of being able to do it is very reassuring. At least for me.

 

I was joking, for me it is way better. just no comparison.

Reaper does have a pretty bland UI, out of the box, and the plugins are quite basic looking (that's probably a compliment LOL). However, they definitely work and perform extremely well... which is more important to a lot of people.

Reaper is what you make of it. No other daw can do that

 

Some actions/scripts I really like:

Lokasenna's "Create bus after/before selected tracks and reroute." It does all the sending automatically, and it mutes the master sends on the sending tracks.

"List linked FX parameters" -- this is helpful if you do a lot of REAPER parameter linking/modulation and maybe lose track of some things, or wonder why a part of your project no longer sounds the same after making a change in a related area.

BirdBird's "Global Sampler": an always-running sampler that records whatever you do. Stick it on the master with the paired JSFX plug, and whenever you do something cool while your project is idle, you've got a wav file recording of it.

amagalma's "Delete CC events by type for selected items." -- if you're like me, you have an insane amount of MIDI Cc data in your project, with MIDI items having an annoying variety of CC automation from item to item. Say you decide that you no longer want the automation data for your snare's filter cutoff in Xils' Stix Drum Synth, but you have 200 different Snare MIDI items that all have different data for different CCs. Select all the items and run the script, and voila-- clean slate for Snare Filter Cutoff.

The wonderful mpl's script: "bypass all FX with latency (PDC) higher than [x] samples" -- plugins with a ton of latency will mess up your timing in your recordings, or even if you're just playing back, they can cause issues if the PDC is higher than your audio buffer. This automates turning them on/off for smooth playback and recording.

All my above recs are for the Main View. In MIDI editor view:

js Multi Tool: script that lets you stretch, warp and shrink collections of MIDI notes.

Smooth CCs-- apply a smoothing function to your jagged CC envelopes

PandaBot's ChordGun -- it's a MIDI gun that sprays chords all over your MIDI editor. Use it like a pistol or a shotgun. It's up to you l.

My first disappointment with Reaper: No ARA support, so I can't run Music Rebalance from iZotope inside a session.

 

lack of VST3 ARA2 support is problem of iZotope, not Reaper

 

Celemony Melodyne 5 works flawlessly in REAPER via ARA, at least that's my experience.

 

Reaper was one the first to support Melodyne ARA.

 

Here too. Also SynchroArt's ReVoice Pro 4 and RePitch. Working great!
