I think probably almost everyone making music falls somewhere in this range. I was just curious between the two which one more people here skew towards? I tend to be way more of the geek, easily distracted and absorbed with the technology, who also likes to play artist every once in awhile... how about you?

All that technical stuff can be interesting, but honestly I dont really care that much. I make music, without spending to much time thinking about all that technical stuff etc.

Its like with cars. Some people are like artists and just drive their car and have fun with it, some others work on it and do handicrafts, but dont drive it that often because they spend most time with technical stuff.
The artists car is not perfect, its properly a bit dirty and have some bucklings here and some scrapes there, but still its a cool car and he loves it.
The geeks car is perfectly tuned, clean and he knows every part of it. He also loves it, but in a different way... Not so much for driving, more for looking at it and knowing all the specs.

Then there are also the people that never or very rarely drive...

If somebody said "I'll let you have a 24track MCI and a Neve board and some UA outboard gear if you stop using that stuff!", I'd do it in a minute. Not sure it's any less "geeky", though. Anything will keep you from "just getting on with it" if you let it. Easier and fun to just tinker than actually do the work to create something from scratch. I never get tired of seeing what different gizmo's will do to tracks, or getting lost in headphone just making cool sounds with synths, or dialing up different impedences and tube levels on mics to see what that sounds like, etc. But my biggest impediment seems to be that since "Oh, I can do that anytime now." then I just don't get to it. I find collaboration tends to motivate me more than working alone.

I'm not the artist I'm a pure geek :) I love technology and all the thing's came from audio area in common... It's pure audio-sex :)
I like to spend hours and hours just playing with some type of synthesis, synths etc... and I like to analyze sound itself.
I would like to have enough on my account to spend on some modular stuff. Am i geek ? :) I'm a super-geek...

    see, nice room:

One can't make electronic music without having a good understand of computers and technology. Some people are geek, Music education and talent and when all comes together, great things happen. I'm not a geek tho I love my computer and I have a basic studio set up at home and I love trying new soft synths, fx and making my beats and also playing gigs, make people dance and have a great time...

I can pretty much say +1 to all that Algae wrote.

Don't think I qualify as a geek even though I can happily spend a whole weekend just tweaking a synth, looking for the perfect sound in a mix.
I was much more of a geek some years ago. I'm simply not up to speed with all the latest tech to be a good geek nowadays.

I dont think there is a fine line...at one time or other we all gravitate to being a geeky artist or an artistic geek...depending on how much you have to get done yourself...im definitely a performer but i know how to run a healthy pc system as well and can spend a good while with technical things...in our age its only normal to be self-sufficient and resourcefull...if you want any kind of success/progress you will need to know your stuff and know it well.. :break:

Can I get an option for both? For me it's all kinda intertwined into the same thing

Like I said I think almost all of us are both in varying degrees and that it probably also varies over time. But I find that I tend towards the tech geeky side of things and that it distracts me from the artistic side. So I was just curious where others on here see themselves. So the question is not which one are you, but which one are you most?
