Personally I'm waiting for the MBP M3 (3nm chips, 40 core+...) in 2024. But yes go for it if you need it :)

I saved up 10k EUR to finally get my hands on this beauty (128GB RAM etc.)

I sometimes envy poor people that can only afford PCs and are not so needy xD

My point was with the new M chips, Hacintoshes can only go so far - certain plugin manufacturers don't support anything but the newest macOS and I went and bought a UAD Volt recently for use on my M1 macbook air, but as it turns out I can't use the free plugins that came with it on my Mojave Hacintosh!

That was the point for Apple : pushing THEIR silicon ... and force OSX upgrades (as usual) to use their last softwares (like Logic ...) ONLY on their silicon

I wonder when their OSX update will be "Apple Silicon only" ?

As a side note, on my evil windows computer, i can still run my old 32bits plugins :wink:

    Pretty easy.

When finally they stop selling MacPro with Intel chips inside them +6 years from that date as the DTO for MacPros from apple for LTS is 5years.

Just look at what their usual practice is, regardless of verdor of chip. The macs are unsupported by the new OS after 6-7 years.
The last Intel Mac Pro is from 2019 (if it will remain the last, indeed), so you can count on Intel chips being unsupported by the MacOS version released in 2025 or 2026.

Usually I will actually test a computer before creating a thread about it. I also know that if I had to work with 8gb ram on one of my Intel machines in Logic, I would have to maybe bounce or freeze some things sooner. That would be the totality of the difference. Instead of running 50 full stems with plugins, I'll get 30 as an example. Maybe every single riser, effects, or "other" small waveforms get consolidated and do not have their own channel. "power users". uh-huh.

I wonder why Apple are still selling machines with 8GB RAM. Looks like a joke, considering current RAM prices.

I'd like to buy a Mac but I'm afraid they'll glue my hand to the mouse.

frankly some manufacturers, like UAD, Waves, iZotope, Presonus, Focusrite etc.. are jerks, the fact you can't use their plugins on few years old MacOS is their problem,
if you take some time to actually explore which manufacturers offer long-term support and compatibility, most of plugins still work on Windows 7 and MacOS 10.8 and up

Just my personal experience, with M1 Air 8/256, most complex project (still in MIDI) with all plugins on HQ, max oversampling and whole mixing/mastering chain in Bitwig, leaves me 1GB of RAM free, no swapping, 256 buffer (internal sound card), 35% CPU utilization from Activity Monitor, Bitwig DSP graph still have some headroom left. Don't use Kontakt, mostly U-He stuff, Omnisphere and Nexus, FabFilter, DSEQ, Ozone, Valhalla and etc, some of the stuff isn't ARM native, so mixture of ARM and Intel plugins. Logic should have even better results, it uses less RAM from the get go and whole pre-buffering thing it does.

They are really trying to make no overlap with their higher specc'ed offerings, so by the time you configure entry level machine, you are in territory of their other models they want to sell you, this drove us to the wall when we tried to come up with alternative to higher specc'ed iMac my friend wanted to replace, no matter the route we went, external display + Mini and etc, it all come down to wait for that iMac, he is video professional working on moderate projects, live shows, weddings, commercials, music videos and etc, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, he indeed needs lot's of RAM and internal storage.

My music partner and myself on other hand are more than happy with entry level machines, even on his old Intel 2500s/8GB machine we couldn't drain the RAM (until we added 60 Nexus instances, but he use 20 of them max for a project), only the CPU, but guess we are minority, target audience for those machines aren't remotely serious projects, but luckily for us, we aren't that serious either, so understand the frustration of others.

Other companies (e.g. car manufacturers) use different brand for entry level/mainstream and for high-end stuff, so you wouldn't come out with the hysterical mantra, expecting high hopes from entry level configuration. "but, but... win pcs are cheaper". Well, if you compare apples to apples, I mean, pc laptops with similar configs to MBP, surprise!... pc won't be cheaper at all.

By the way, I'm just experimenting Monterey via OCLP on a Mid-2009 MBP and it's not as flawless and fast as the officially supported OSs. Except something like video streaming in web browser, that seems more efficient.
So, it's not that Apple intentionally forces you to upgrade hardware, it's more about the technology that they implement in newer OSs that can make your mac faster, more power-efficient (using dedicated codecs in newer SoC).
How is it that WIndows would run on more generations? it's because Windows hasn't improved that much over the years and because Windows has to run on infinite numbers of hardware. Oh, wait, Windows 11 is limited to certain hardware. Again, that's Apple's fault: :knock: whatever they do, the rest of the industry – slowly – follows.
