So Splice has a new feature where you can now generate your own proof of license to use their samples. Anybody tried this yet? Do you think this is a good tool for producers to have or just nonsense? How do you see this affecting your use of samples?

How I see it (aka what is in there for Splice): it's a license proof generator. It supposedly saves you the time to write your own dispute on e.g. Youtube in case of content ID block, which you would have to do anyway. I can see here Splice trying to get more legit subscribers since you can only generate the license proof when subscribed (and not if you downloaded samples from e.g. sister's ofc).

Anyway, I have seen some court cases regarding copyright (not related to Splice) and I must say - for me, this is an interesting if not a gray area, even when you own the Splice's "certified license". Here is a video I remember someone already posted, with the guy from Venus Theory channel having a headache about the matter. And rightfully so..

Great video. The splice-problem was one of the reasons I stopped releasing music on my label The Arcadium. We were supporting new and upcoming artists but we just got way too many copyright claims due to previously used Splice samples. The solution for my own music is simply not to use any „musical“ samples at all. Single drum hits are fine, maybe an FX or a hi hat loop. But anything that‘s recognizable should be custom made.

 

Many Samples which are available on Splice can be bought on Developers Website and are claimed Royality Free there. Does Splice watermark their files or how can they be sure you are using their version instead of Developers one?

 

I love using samples to get a track going, and sometimes even more if you get stuck for a next idea. But they are never very hard to remake or replace, and then you can delete the samples before you finish and print the track.

 

I think these are most for the people that grab a recognicible melodic sample, dont edit it whatsoever and slap into a video or whatever cause of their job. I do it sometimes with the envato ones, and their offer the same license txt thingy to download. For the time being none of my clients had a video taken down, but if they will in the future I just have to insert the license and It will be cleared.

I don't think we are on the realm of asking to take down something over a snare or a kick... yet
