it seems like if i have to remove a volume envelope

i have to make calculations at what point he volume envelope was at...and add or dedult that from fader volume if i need to keep same overall volume as before removing the envelope

am i doing something wrong or is it how it works?

i was hoping volume would remain the same after volume envelope is removed

Reaper's trim/read mode is counterintuitive and annoying, at least to me. I change all my envelopes to read mode.

BTW is there a way to set this in the preferences, so envelopes use read mode by default?

yup, non-intuitively, not in Automation Preferences, but in Reaper -> Preferences -> Project -> Track/Sends Defaults -> "Default automation mode" dropdown

Ah thanks, now I know the right keyphrase, "Default automation mode", I've found it in the manual!

Yes. As you can see, none of the level automations is called fader automation and for good reason because the fader doesn't move, it stays where it is. So no matter which mode or which volume automation you're using, after you remove the automation the level jumps back to the fader's position.

I sometimes find Reapers terms confusing or unclear, but after reading or searching I usually realize why they use the terms.
Like this example, it seems they are usually clear and more specific and applicable to Daws. (As opposed to terms inherited from pre-DAW times).

Absolutely, I sometimes wonder that stop and play is still called stop and play.
