Hi,i used to record from turntable to the pc using an old version of wavelab(version 5 i think)
whats my option now?
i have audacity but cant get it to record from my turntable via focusrite pro 24.
just when im on the topic.what level should i be recording into?
when i transferred vinyl to wavelab previously,i just recorded in and the level on wavelab wasnt in red,but just below

Yes, especially when you're recording you should avoid clipping (red). Whether you're 1dB below or 10 doesn't really matter.

 

I used to connect the turntable to the Phono RCA connector of the stereo amplifier, because of the RIAA equalization, you can't connect to the audio interface unless you have the Phono input.

However, it seems to me that Audacity has some Phono RIAA correction, but the result could be disappointing.

yes i used with pro 24,i used adapter phono to jack to go into the pro 24. was that wrong?

 

A simple convert plug is not enough to capture sound from a (non-USB) turntable.
This is because it's signal has a different EQ curve that needs to be inverted to get a 'normal sound'.
This is done in classic Hi-Fi amplifiers (hardware), but also possible in software, with Audacity, like Orbitbooster wrote above, or with the 'Phono Filter' plugin in Acon Acoustica premium.

Do you mean the preamplifier like the one shown by @MRFEENIX ?

Or just RCA to jack cable?

 

so if i want to burn the track to cd i transferred from vinyl to pc and it was 10db below zero

i brought a cable from the output of the mixer to the back of pro 24,used 2jack to female rca adapters in the pro 24 to put the rca cable from mixer
sorry i didnt mention the mixer in original post.

 

What mixer is this (brand/type), does it have a phono input?

 

its a behringer not sure of model,standard dj mixer
turntables are connected via phono input then there is an phono output

OK so you should have included the info at the start it really helps trying to help you with your problem. If its Behringer DJ mixer tell us what model. Usually you have either a Tape out, Main out or Record out. Use one of these to the input of your interface with the cables you describe adjust the gain to not clip.

 

Are you choosing the right interface in Audacity?

 

its vmx1000 mixer,yeah its tape out or main out that much crap sitting on it at mo i cant get round back of it hehe
so im doing it correct then in that regard.
so once its recorded onto software and not clipping,is it ready to burn to cd?
does it need normalized then?
previously i had just been burning to cd at the level i had transferred it to wavelab.just below clipping.i watched when transferring the tracks to wavelab and it never clipped during the process

 

Need to be ALBUM normalized, to maximize CD support BUT not alter levels between tracks

 

Sorry to join the party this late in the day, but when I'm sending mixes from Turntables to Digital I make sure they peak around-6DB, then once I've digitised them, I filter out everything below 30 HZ (or there about ) and stick a limiter to 0.03 ceiling and boost to taste. and then YES I absolutely normalise and also add in dither as well.

Just record the line out from your mixer or use a soundcard with a phono input normalize it and your done
