I hear a difference and prefer the sound of the Logic stock EQ, but I assume that they both have different Q values. So I can't say for certain whether it's a phasing issue or just different EQ "topologies". One would need to double-check with a tool like Plugin Doctor to come to definite conclusions here.

There is no EQ with phasey sound. This is nonsense. The human ear is not even able to hear phase. What we hear are phase differences. That means the problem is either your routing or you don't know how to use an EQ.

It's useless to argue with those "you can't measure it but i can hear it" people who dont' understand the mathematics behind digital audio processing. Just entering the same values in different algorithms doesn't mean you get the same filter curve. And different curves sound different, for sure. To really compare different algorithms for unwanted artifacts, ringing or transient response, you have to perfectly match the filter curves first.

Any of the PSPaudioware EQs would be appropriate in this case.

Probably a parametric or fixed band EQ with no analyzer, also no graphic EQ

cheating, it has an option to show an analyzer :P

Making a thread about EQ recommendations only to get told from "experts" who dont do music for a living that all EQs sound the same LOL. Gotta love the internet :D

damn, I really gotta learn how to listen to the difference between all these digital EQ that cancel each other 99.99% to inaudible -100db on the same settings. Didn't know that they have their own sound. Definitely on me.

And that is in fact not the case as I described before and the thread opener doesn't want to understand.

Example: FabFilter and DMG bell type EQs (which are using different calculations for Q values)

To get the same filter curve, you have to multiply the Q value of the DMG algorithm by the square root of 2 (that's 1.414) to get the right value for FabFilter EQs.
You can test it yourself, dial in a bell with Q=0.7 in a DMG EQ like Equilibrium and a bell with Q=1.0 in a FabFilterEQ and they will null.

Just setting the same Q values will result in different curves and of course sound different.

To make everything more complicated, simple digital filters (like most stock EQs: Logic, Ableton, Reaper and so on) get steeper towards the nyquist frequency, what's called "cramping" nowadays, and more complex modern EQs like DMG or Fabfilter are using algorithms to prevent this even without oversampling. So just comparing them by setting the same numbers without caring for the differences will lead to different curves.

LOL. yea sometimes so weird that some people actually dont hear differences between EQ's! Or something truly wrong with your monitoring or your ears hahahaha. My Ears are "Over" sensitive to Phasing so i hear so many differences between eq's and "imaging shifts" due to shifts in Phase rotations. My personal favorite Clean\EQ all time is Kirchoff @ 117bit x2, only then i cant hear phasing/shifts anymore. Fab Proq3 has loads of phasing shift\issues! Even tho its a Great EQ! Cheers

yeah lol, maybe audio engineering just isnt for them, I dunno. Nice Studio By the way, is that the orbit summing mixer you got? Antelope outputs and rupert neve sound: must be a good combination :)

yeah, I know about this. Each EQ plugin has their own way of defining its Q value. Pro-Q3 is different to Equilibrium where the Q value is defined by the curve type selected which ultimately based on the hardware it models. Pro-Q3 doesn't model anything so they picked the most ideal (by fabfilter definition of course) Q value. Filters relation type, parallel or serial also define the final curve behind the scene instead of what you see on the analyzer also count, ie. TDR Nova with its parallel filters, or the famous Motown EQ for hardware.

By same settings of course I mean with matching the curve precisely while being aware the Q value of them. None of this matter because it looks like uSe yOuR eAr is far way more important rather than math behind it. It's Audio Engineering, why bother about math.

That is gaslighting. No one has made this claim. You just want to distract from the fact that you cannot prevail against others with your misinformation.
Do you work at the tax office? And what difference does it make for this topic whether you earn your money with music, film, radio, advertising, sound design, electrical engineering, coding, cleaning or cooking? Again: gaslighting.

I'll let you in on an open secret: your ears are phase shifters.

Seriously guys, stop spreading such nonsense. There is no phasing with EQs unless you modulate a band or route it in parallel.

You heard it, guys. Dr. Neckbeard has spoken! All EQs sound the same. Phase shift doesn't change depending on the EQ. Thread closed.

R/click on an EQ8 and select 'oversampling.' That should fix any phasing issues you feel you're having. Or aliasing issues to be more precise.

I don't know why people are arguing with Grater The Master of Faders. Grater has a top monitoring system and is a Professional Audio Engineer getting paid the big bucks. Grater's ears are like fine instruments of objectivity. No math required.

I don't see the need to continue to reply to him. We've given him quite a few suggestions on his thread question. As for his EQ decisions, that's up to him. He can continue to "use his ears" rather than trust a measuring instrument like PluginDoctor. It's like somebody saying "I've measured 5 meters all my life I don't need a ruler to do so". If he wants to know exactly how the EQ is performing he could just measure it himself but instead he's continuing to argue about our credibility, whereas all throughout he's been making subjective conclusions. There is no info/demo on the material he's affecting, no demonstrations on how steep/narrow he's cutting, and in turn, he's blaming the tools instead.

No one claimed every EQ is the same too, btw.

Don't waste any more time guys
