bring that SM58 a little closer.... proximity effect bruh. Its better to capture all the info and remove what you want out than wishing you had captured more information on a perfect take

It's probably there for ambiance or something like that, so it has to be a bit further to capture the area he wants, i doubt that was not on purpose.

 

You might want to move the 57-mics out a bit. You are almost at the center of the drum. Fear of hitting the mics can be one of many distractions for nailing a good take.
Have it an inch above the rim (away from playing) and instead aim it towards the center of the drum (for more smack/attack, rather then aiming it down at the rim for more ringing).

 

Yes the 58 is a room mic for ambience. I have a rode nt2a I want to use for this instead but I don't know how to give phantom power to just the rode and not the shures. I am using an 18i20 focusrite. These shures (or dynamic mics in general) won't suffer any damage by phantom.

You should be carefull though if you have a ribbon mic or something like a computer or DJ mixer connected to the mic inputs of the interface somehow. If it's just the shures and the rode, you can put phantom on all of them and it'll be fine.

This is a question I've had for awhile. The 18i20 gives phantom power to a range of inputs rather than individual mics. The shures will be in that range. I guess the fact that it applies 48v to a range means non phantom mics are safe? I heard somewhere that the wiring of the shures means it will ignore the 48v?

 

I think they are too close, both to the center and to the head. Too much proximity, especially on cardioids like sm57. But that's a matter of taste and preference ofc. I prefer a more natural sound of the drums.

Thanks. I can fit 3 fingers between the skin and mic. I am not unhappy with the recordings I am getting.

No, I mean too close to the center where the head is moving the most. Too bassy (high proximity) and too masking/overlapping in the lows. The "three fingers" is usually counted from the rim, when using the lovely Sennheiser md421 (for example).
I would also aim the snare 57-mic away from the hihat (and shield it a bit from the hat with some foam) to reduce hihat bleed, and point/aim it more to the floortom rather than to the drummer.

Keep at it! There's no right or wrong. Only personal preference.
