I am planning to buy a new processor and audio interface.
I was going through the DAW benchmarks and did not understand a word.
In lay man terms, can someone explain what this means?

Which is the right processor to upgrade to? I use a lot of VSTs and record very little audio.
I am also upgrading my audio interface. I had an UAD DSP which I sold recently.
In order to use my UAD plugins, I need to get a UAD product. Does Apollo Solo have significant performance difference from RME ones?

I need to upgrade my motherboard as well. I have the GA UD4 X99 but that seems outdated to support latest processors and DDR5 RAMs.

 

Go with Intel. Look for single thread performance. Multi thread has no bearing on audio. Single thread performance is what you are looking for. Intel is better than AMD for audio

Any i7 above 7th gen (starting with No: 7 or above). Beyond that it depends on how much simultaneous processing you need, For more plugs try a 10th or 11th gen. I use both Intel and AMD. Intel once had the edge for processing music etc but Ryzens are fine.

 

If I were to buy a new pc today I would go for an Intel processor with socket 1700 like Intel Core i9 13900K or Intel Core i9 12900KS. The DDR5 RAM you can buy highly depends on the motherboard you choose. Always check the (Q)uality (V)endor (L)ist of this board to see what ram it will work with it before buying.

The choice of motherboard highly depends on your budget and what configuration you need or desire. But for me it would be one with either the Z690 or Z790 chipset.

So this is what I think your action list should look like:

1. Choose the processor you want and can afford.
2. Choose a motherboard that has the features that you need/want.
3. Check the QVL of this motherboard to see what ram works. If you want the option to upgrade in the near future, choose ram that will be accepted on all 4 memory slots so you can upgrade up to 128Gb. Don't focus too much on memory speed! In real life you won't notice any difference between 5200 MHz and 6000 MHz. The real difference is that you pay almost twice as much for the latter.

Definitely go with Intel for audio production. 12th generation i5, i7 or i9 is a lot better than older i7. 13th generation is even a step above but consumes more energy ( tdp and turbo) than the 12th generation.

 

I have an i7 and Microsoft have decided it isn't good enough for Windows 11 so be sure to check their compatability list.
