I wanted to get some opinions of people who have been in the hardware game for awhile. So basically the title says it all. My daughter is 2 years old and I was thinking of a idea . So each year I am planning on purchasing analog gear. The first thing I was looking at possibly purchasing is a moog matriarch and each year till she turns 18 spending roughly around the same amount on a new peice of gear. And when and if she decides to go to college or start a business or really anything that I feel or she feels that would make her life better I can go and start selling them one by one. What do you honestly think of this idea? It's crazy what the mark up on vintage gear is and as long as I would pick good brands and limited edition items I think I could possibly be making a smart investment as well as get to have some cool gear till she gets older. But I haven't been around long enough to know if this is a good idea or a really bad one. So any insight would be appreciated

I don't know about vintage gear, I do have several pedals that have held their value or even increased their value.

I would suggest looking into the value of unopened toys as well, this is something you will probably be researching to a degree anyway as you buy her toys. There may be a lot of advice online about this market. If you get the right toy at the right time your daughter could make a huge amount of money.

Yeah I have alittle time I was looking at guitar pedals and also fx rack units I figured even if I do break even and I stick with one decent priced unit between 2 and 3,000 when she turns 18 I'll have about 40 thousand dollars in gear .. and that would be if none of them go up in value.. I appreciate the outlook and I'll be doing some research. I don't think analog gear is going anywhere anytime soon

To be honest, you should invest in something that is stable and will appreciate over time. I'm not sure vintage gear is that thing, especially if you're using it in the meantime. Besides, you shouldn't be playing with your daughter's future.

(That last sentence was a joke.)

Premium Bonds, or the equivalent in your country would be the wisest approach. Audio gear, toys, etc are very hit and miss

I hear ya I have other things I put money in for our family. The gear will more then likely be bought.. I'm very easy on things and take very good care of everything I own so some people ya it wouldn't be the best idea.. I've purchased used stuff before some that was great and some stuff I could tell they were pigs and didn't take very good care of stuff.. I'm just looking at it like I highly doubt if I purchase a moog synth it's gonna go way down in value in 18 years .. I could be wrong but hey I could be wrong about my other investments.. shit my 401k went down 3,400 dollars in 14 months so its all in what you are willing to lose I guess . And if nothing else I got some really cool gear

I said the same thing 3 or 4 years ago lol..plus I need a good reason to tell my wife I want this stuff :rofl:I'll definitely have to see what more recent synths values have been in the past 5 years and do some other market research

Just purchase the moog matriarch then put everything else into something more stable.

I think there will always be that market of collectors and the occasional wealthy producer studio actually using the stuff willing to pay whatever for it, but as plugins get closer and closer to analog quality coupled with cheaper and cheaper analog clones, I think the market is shrinking due to recent years crazy absurd secondhand pricing increases. If you use the gear you also need to factor in maintenance, even if you just properly box and store it, probably will need a very costly tuneup.

Personally, I wouldn't think of it as an investment (as in 18 years saving for university), buy rare stuff I want and like at bargain prices, use and enjoy it, and later down the line if its worth something great, if not oh well. Plus, there are many grants and scholarships available.. you literally dont need any money to go. its how I paid for my schooling, twice over. Of course some of it will have to be paid back over time once working. Anyway. Food for thought.

I saw 2 Voyagers sell within past 6months or so, both sell for under $4 grand each; and both ~20 years old. They do not go up with a lot of predictability. Just "old" doesn't make them rocket up to big prices.

Buy some good bottles of wine and invest in the MIC (Military Industrial Complex)!
If the world turns completely to shit, you still have some good bottles of wine to enjoy worlds end with your daughter!

Purchasing hardware to pay for daughters college
Using daughters college as an excuse to buy hardware

Joking aside - invest in something that is guaranteed to increase in value; land, housing etc. Maybe explore long-term/small (low risk) investing.

Also, get life insurance. The last thing you want to do is leave your daughter with bills and funeral costs if tragedy occurs. Good luck.
