I can't understand the whole scheme on creating a bootable SSD,

after creating a clone using Carbon Copy Cloner I tried restarting from the ext SSD clone but it asked for a user password and requires I remained on line, then rebooting fails...now I see info about m1s been impossible to boot from and even CCC has no info to support real clones. but why in the world do you have to be online to9 boot from a external hard drive anyway...

Any advise on how to create a bootable external SSD on a m1 Mac.

first go to disc utility > show all devices > go to ext hdd root > erase > and format as master boot > after that clone

Since when do Mac bootdrives need the MSDOS Master Boot Record option? I thought they use a GUID partition table?
CCC is known for giving troubles when cloning the system drive. I used Super Duper, but only to create a cloned volume on the same Container Disk, have no experience with external drives.

The trick is after you clone your previous drive go into recovery mode and put a new Montery on the cloned drive.
do NOT erase just put a new OP on the clone and it will boot right up.
I had the same issue coming from an Intel Mac to M1.

ok so correct me if I am wrong
1-you format as master boot aka windows ?
2-Then clone to the drive from Carbon copy cloner or superDuper?
3-Then head back to recovery mode and install Monterey from the internet?

IS this because m1 Macs need to see a user account to boot?

This video shows how to clone and restore your internal drive unto a external SSD with out restoring using recover online or Apple sending information about what software you have unsigned back to the mother F-cker ship?

Do not use a master boot on Mac. Use the APFS filing system.
Master Boot format is for Windows. Go into the Utilities and choose Disk Utility.
Choose your external drive on the left and format as APFS. You may have to choose erase.
    After that begin your clone.
When it's done boot into recovery mode with your external drive connected to the Mac.
Choose the Monterey install on to the cloned SSD drive.
It will only replace Monterey and the files on your external SSD will be untouched.
When it's done hold down the start button on your Mac until you see the options.
Choose you ext. SSD and it will boot right up.

I found this video for what I want to do, I find it all suspicious how Apple wants to force people to share their data with their mother ship aka sh1t., its actually illegal but my point is the wifi password gets stored in the ram according to this guy

Anyway a friend just tested a dual boot method that works
    she said you
1-Reboot the computer holding down the fingerprint-power botton until you see the option
2-Get into disk utilities and format the targeted external SSD as AFPS
3-Restore the internal drive to the volume
4-Then you install Monterey from the net

but there are multiples catches here
1- Apple saves your WIFI details unto the machine.,
*forget the idea of restarting with wifi off until little snitch kicks in,
*you need to physically shut off your wifi router so any thing you need private is not malware prone
2- All your authorised licenses (iLok, Plugin Alliance, etc) will have to be moved to the new machine ID (on the SSD)
