The acquisition means that the market is saturated and customers have less money (recession, economic downturn, commodity price inflation, food price increases, rent increases, etc.) in other language Slate's business model no longer yields enough cash.

After Native Instruments (Francisco Partners), Steinberg (Yamaha), PreSonus (Fender) were bought up, nothing surprises us anymore. The big financially strong eat the small. In old science fiction movies, there are only 5 companies and Team R2R that own the world.

Avid is Independent and acquires other Companies as you can see in the List in the Wiki Article.

is just a race for the top: companies are well aware that they all offer the same plugins and now they conglomerate to push the best offer at $9.99 a month (because, as with streaming services, they're also aware that people would only go for 2, maximum 3 services). in the long run the winner will be the conglomerate with the most complete solution: daw, fx plugins, instrument plugins, sounds and sound libraries & presets

this solidification will probably hurt the small developers the most and will also slow down the overall development of audio-related software. it can be also nasty if we will have a duopoly or cartel situation

these being said, we can do nothing about it, just do your music as per usual, everyone's safe (software-wise) for at least the upcoming decade. what economy or global politics will bring, that no one can predict

actually it seems Slate business model is one of major reasons it's seen as valuable company to acquire, as written in the statement:

“The Slate Digital team share many of the key attributes we have across all our brands; great technology combined with committed staff with a real energy and passion for what they do” comments James Gordon, CEO of Audiotonix. “Their history and reputation for building stellar software tools is second to none, and from a business perspective their success in building a strong subscription model adds another bow in how we grow in the audio creation market. Personally, I’m looking forward to working with the Grenoble and US teams, to support them with their aspiration to continue to innovate technically and commercially, and to have some fun along the way.”

obviously tech companies with inevitably high running costs and relatively lower profits are trying to find "software leverages" to balance their portfolio

Avid Technology is a stock corporation
Avid has collected and earned so much money that they also have Digidesign and Pro tools and others.

    obviously...!!!!
Which is why I only stick to small and capable plugin companies like TDL, Fabfilter, DMG Audio, Fuse Audio Labs, and many more.

It's probably the best time to get out of the audio business (or any other business), before the global financial crisis strikes.

it's best to diversify your income to have multiple sources, anyone who has only one job is effectively 50/50 homeless at this point

I wouldn't be that skeptical about audio business, people can't live happily without entertainment and audio world totally offers some

I could happily never buy another audio plugin again, and I would still be able to make amazing music.

PS food also tastes better than plugins, so that's where the money will be going for a lot of people :)
