    Nothing to lose or win?
    A major function and purpose of debate is to find out what propositions lose or win.
    Of course that may be decided by individuals in their own minds, or by survey or by judge's criteria.

    Debate, especially formal debate, is about castration, evisceration, decapitation, back-stabbing, demolition, destruction, cremation....
    Of course the object of all that is the opponent's arguments for or against a proposition.

    Nothing to win or lose seems more like friendly discussion.

    I totally agree. But I said it from another perspective. Nothing to gain but to be right about something or to lose. There are people who strive to be right just to feel they own the truth. What you mention is a collective winning. Of course, you are right. But in a debate you win when both sides seek to rescue something "good" from that debate.

    Ah, OK I see. I think I misunderstood because "nothing to win, nothing to lose" directly followed "It is beautiful to debate".

    It is beautiful to debate when people are not seeking to be right, but to find different points of view. we win nothing if the other person is offended or upset or just wants to be right, you "win" when more than one person can have a healthy debate. I think it would be good for another "post" but if like you, I don't want to unveil the post, although I already did it in part. ) :
