A very strange discussion. "Monitors" at this pricerange are nothing more than mid-level multimedia with well-known logos, this has nothing to do with professional use. Buy an old 90's hifi amplifier + speakers, it will be a much better solution.

i would strongly recommend to stay with headphones until you can afford a threated room and something like Neumann KH80 / KH120 or Adam A7x or Genelecs

Available most everywhere due to their cult-like status, the Sony SS-CS5 is a capable budget speaker that really shines after some inexpensive crossover mods. Can be had here in the states for under $150 and often on sale for $75 a pair. I purchased an open box set for $60 and was so impressed with them that I grabbed another OB pair for $45 about 6 weeks later with the intention of modding one pair and keeping the other stock as a reference. All in all, they are decent performers that swing above their weight class and even more so after budgeting in the price of a fast-food lunch for mods per speaker.

I used the Eris E5 XT in a large living room with no neighbours (detached house), and they went pretty loud while retaining clarity.

You could have 10,000 monitors if your listening environment isn't treated and. Tuned .. your better off with 50 dollar ear buds

I'm sorry that that's offtopic but I got to say, I got exactly 50$ earbuds and since I received and tweaked them, I exclusively work with them. :bleh:

You raise a good point though, it's very good to have a set of speakers and headphones, both which you know well. Adding earbuds to the mix won't hurt either.

OP, whatever you end up with, at first spend some time just listening to music you know & like first. Get to know your monitoring gear.

Depending on your taste I'd go for the JBL 305 mkII. Frequencyplot wise they're more in the Neumann-smoothness area, so if you're more into Genelec you might consider something else.

Old thread, but either way, in that price range, Fluid Audio F5 are great, still have them stashed in a box. Mackie MR524 are also worth considering, low self noise (probably lowest in that price range) and deliver as any other monitor in that price range (Adam, JBL, KRK, Kali and etc).
