    Sorry, seems my communication skills to have left the building (aka brain) when I started this thread.
    IOW, of course I do not have different stems than the other contestants. It was meant as a joke (which obviously didn't work).

    Some doubts that I don't know if they were answered (I didn't find);

    1 - Can we use De Esser? If yes, which model is allowed;
    2 - At the time of judging, will the mixes be level matched or will they be placed at the volume you mixed?
    3 - Is cutting the leakage between the tones valid?
    4 - Clip gain in small pieces is valid?
    5 - How many automations are considered valid? 1 pass and its done, 2?

    Interesting enough to get me out of my post covid infection depression to say:

    A very interesting take on the single desk channel mix.

    Some very nice mixes as people are not pushing for loudness, love it! Might even get up to will to take a run through, but I remember this track from a while back, Moss something, isn't this a producer's cut with filtered and gated takes printed as stems? Anyway, getting ahead of myself.

    Good job to many of you guys.

    Not yet.

    An extra de-esser??? Of course not.

    No.

    Everything you could do manually with four hands (only 13 stems, so not enough space for half a dozen people) and in realtime on a console is allowed.

    That print actually does have a very nice API character to it. It doesn't really hold up on the extreme top, but nobody is going to notice. Color me impressed.

    Was not expecting that, but it did make me smile. Thanks.

    That, I was not expecting at all.

    That is some serious loudness for a one desk tape print. It has to be near if not at -14LU or even a smidge over. I can hear the compromises but I also know that at those levels and with the tools used that is still an accomplishment. I'm not familiar with Taupe but I am not sure it's playing nice with the bass from the API emu. Not my bag to push it that hard, but if needs must and it were necessary I think it is spot on for what it is.

    Have fun, and be careful. I'm still dealing with the mental need to having had to need a vacation to recover from my vacation.

    Well, I'll still have email and an internet connection and my workaholic side with me, so I'll maintain 1/3 of my impeding heart attack.

    Thank you for your words! :mates:
    There are specially meaingful since I'm not a mixer nor mastering engineer for rock, it's either jazz/hip hop-trip hop/electronic music - I know they are way different but these are my consuming genres.

    My experience with AA Taupe is that it's quite manageable in terms of input gain. Instead of using it with swiss precision I just go for the sound I want with a -10/-5dB (on the meter inside TAUPE) and not giving a damn about the volume representation. It has a VERY helpful dry/wet signal that allows paralleling, inspite of not having an input gain (which to the team I have requested). A utility before it solves the issue. That doesn't mean not caring about the input volumes, that means learning to squeeze it like a kitchen sponge and how to gainstage into it (somewhere around -10 or 12 dB), specially around the group phase and bass track. With this track is relatively easy as you don't have weird volume spikes (the vocal has some, but it's a vocal, so...) and the tracks come enoughly low.

    The bass problem may be a phase one :( the Taupe output is stereo and may have created some damage there.

    In relation to loudness: the output gain in AATaupe helps a lot. Considering that we were not allowed using limiters (and Taupe has one pretty decent but oldy), I run the entire track searching for clipping and then make it peak as close as possible to -0.1 dBFS, with the DAWs peak meter (StudioOne 5). That doesn't mean it is close to -0.1 but it's as good as my patience was :rofl:.

    If you want I can run the bass through different presets with decent satudistortion, I had to bring the worklappy, it's fast and I get bored easily at the beach.

    Kind regards,
    D.

    OK, here is my two hour take on this. I wish I had more energy but it is what it is and it is getting better daily.

    1970s tech but as parameters allowed 50 series and bussing and that made my life easier I went with what was allowed. I would have liked to mix and match comps to use a 525 as a De-esser or have the ability to insert a few 565 Filters for some LP/HP functions but the plugins and the consoles are not 1:1 equivalents and the although the console has the option to load different EQ and comps on different slots, it was outside of regulations, so it is what it is.

    So this is what I think the plugins are emulating, I might be off but I am not looking it up so if you know let me know and then I'll know for the future.

    Lindell 50
    IN -> 512v
    50B -> 501B Stepped
    VCA -> 527A / not quite a 528SC
    Gate/Expander -> 235L? No idea what it is modeling TBH

    IK Tr5 Space Delay as Delay (Roland RE-201 1973)
    Ik Tr5 Tape Echo as Ecco (Maestro Echoplex ep-3 1969)
    SDD Verbum Entropic Hall Reverb (No idea what it is emulating but it sounded crappy enough and I am demoing it right now)

    24T Tape IK TR5 TM80 Studer 80 MTT on 3M 250 ART tape (1970)
    2T MT IK Tr5 TEAC A-6100 on Ampex 499HO Tape (1972)

    This is print with the full caboodle. It sits at -14.4LUFS but it really can't take much more before it gets trashed. It's already sub-optimal for my tastes, plus the w/f and the way the tape bump blurs the bass, yuk. Glad we live in better times now.

    This a print just pushing the 2Track Recorder the TEAK a-6100 on the same Ampex 499HO, I just bypassed the TM80 same signal path and adjusted the bias and EQ on the A-6100. It is at -15.9 LUFS but the gain in transients and clarity is worth the loss of loudness for me.

    This is just the console output with all tape bypassed, but not re-balanced since you mix into tape and your output needs to be whatever to get the sound you want out of the tape rather than the console which there was no other way to record that back then. I was pushing the channels a little to get a little more sausage at the terminus. -16.7 LUFS.

    I confess that I found it kind of strange not being able to use an de esser, but I ended up trying to do it without it...
    The lack of low pass and hipass, deesser, other equipment/plugin colors, even no color at all, or even more modern options that make it easier to achieve a polished sound make things difficult bcuz I want to find the sound of certain things I'm used to.

    Simple Mix, straight to the point

    @JMOUTTON Not gonna lie man, high end is the weakest link for me. I haven't figured it out yet. I don't like the highs and always have to go against my instinct with them so it sounds normal for people.
    In this particluar instance I also overbiased the tape.
    And your mix actually sounds the best without any tape, the third option. it's your favourite too, I get it?
